Hello Again Ireland Reaching Out,
Last summer you were of tremendous help when I asked about my Casey and Ryan relatives in Turagh! So I'm hoping you can help again. I've been looking at Griffith's Valuation and see that in 1851 there was a Thomas Ryan (Stephen) and a Thomas Ryan (Luke) residing in Turagh, as well as a Bridget Ryan. The map reference for Thomas Ryan (Stephen) is 28 34; for Thomas Ryan (Luke) is 28 107; and for Bridget Ryan it is 28 66. I've been trying to figure out which Thomas Ryan is my grt-grandfather. Could you explain the "Luke" and "Stephen" references? I'm unaware of any Luke Ryan or Stephen Ryan in my family; there are, however, an abundance of Williams, Michaels, Thomases, and Johns!
In January 1917 my grt-uncle Thomas Casey died in San Francisco. My grt-grandmother, Hanora Ryan (dtr of Thomas & Bridget), was the informant listed on his death certificate. At that time she gave her maiden name as Hanorah Ryan Stephens. This has puzzled me for a very long time. But now I'm wondering if the "Stephens" can be tied back to the Thomas Ryan (Stephen) of the Valuation?
I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks ever so much!

Welcome back to IRO!
Without seeing the document, normally Luke and Stephen would have been the fathers name for each Thomas. The fathers name would have been a way to distinguish one family from the other. Don't know if thee is a connection from Hanora Ryan Stephens back to the 1851 document but in 1917 there would be no need to try to distinguish a Ryan family.
