My great grandfather James Scanlon married a Beesy Boles in early 1867 and they had a daughter Margaret born around Nov 1, 1867 in Ballymote, Sligo.  At some point the story goes that Beesy and James contracted Typhoid Fever and Beesy didn't make it.  Margaret was shared back and forth between James and his new wife Winifred Gillen and their family and Beesy's parents, Ellen Lynch and Thomas Boles.  James would walk to where Margaret was staying when he didn't have her and one day he got to her relatives and was told her grandparents took her to America (they had been upset he had married so soon after Beesy died).  I think they settled in New Jersey but I don't know if they changed her last name or if she married and had a family.  I cannot find any information on her whatsoever.  Does anyone know anything about the family and what happened to Margaret?  None of really knows what happened to her.  Any kind of information would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Dear Kathy:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

As you stated above, it is very possible that Margaret's name was changed.  You might consider creating a profile for Margaret under the XO Chronicles feature which is located at the top of the page.  These profiles are a great way of finding out further information about ancestors as they are updated weekly, are widely ready by all our members and often lead to sharing of new information from other members who are also researching the same families.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.  You can email me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

The very best of luck with your research!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
