    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The first link below is the civil birth record for the 1869 John. I also located a second John Kenny civil birth record in 1876 with the same parents. Did the 1869 John die and the parents named another boy John? Roots Ireland had the following children for John  Kenny and Catherine Connaughton: James 1865 Sarah 1866 Mary 1867 John 1869 Peter 1871 Catherine 1873 Patrick 1875 John 1876 (civil) Thomas 1876 (church) Michael 1878 Bridget 1880 Malachy 1882 Anne 1883 Hugh 1884 Charles 1886 Joseph 1888   That makes 16 children but possibly the 1876 John and Thomas were the same person and there was a mistake and the registrar/clerk showed John on the ciivl record instead of Thomas.

I also located the civil death records for Catherine (1918) and John (1920).

Let me know what questions you have.

This is absoluley fabulous!!!  So very helpful....

I am doing a Family History Project and I'm hopeful it will go out next week.  YOU have added much!

No.  I believe there was only one JOHN JOSEPH (Oct 23, 1869) and there was a Thomas - so I think your supposition is exactly on point!

Armed with this, I am so hopeful for more Information!!!

    Bless You!

Having now had a chance to review the documents, I am even more impressed and appreciative of what YOU have done for us!

Thank you so much for both the summary and the links probvided.  We are in debt...

Am I assuming correctly that I could continue in this research / direction by Subscribing to: https://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/subscribe.php  ???

...and I further assume you would recommend this approach ???

Again, what you did above is magnificent and so much help...

    Thank You!

  • Bill:

Glad to help. A short-term subscription to Roots Ireland would be helpful to get the exact baptismal dates for the Kenny children. One cautionary note, the Ballinameen records start in 1859 so going back earlier for the parents will be possible unless they were baptized in another parish which has records back earlier.

www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free site which has civil birth, marriage and death records. That is the site where I found the death records for Catherine and John.

  • Roger ~ Again I am indebted, my friend...  We may make it to Roscommon this summer (live in WA State, USA). I'm assuming you are from area. If you wish, send contact info to K***ybps@comcast.net (you know what astericks are) and perhaps we could share a pint.

In any case, Thank You very much!

Ps. Always welcome more info or tips!

Greetings "old friend"!  We are about to go over to Ireland (May) and I will be dedicating a few days to going exoloring into County Roscommon...  Would welcome any advice / recommendations for learning more about my ancestors and history.

With your help, I did complete somewhat of a "Kenny Family Project" and would be happy to mail (large PDF on flash drive) to you for your info or comments / upgrades...

    Hope to hear from you.

  • Roger ~  Greetings - hope you're doing well...

I'm not quite sure what your reply means re: HQ (?)

Anything that you would recommend that we do while in Ireland in effort to learn more about my Kenny / Roscommon Family Ancestry?

I do plan on spending several days within Roscommon.

Thank you in advance for any guidance!

HQ--Headquarters  We always alert our staff in Ireland that someone is visiting.

I assume you will be visiting the area where your gg grandfather came from in Roscommon. I would also recommend that you visit the Strokestown Park and the National Famine Museum. http://www.strokestownpark.ie/

Besides visiting the Kenny ancestral area, I would not recommend trying to do research in Ireland. Almost all of the info is online. I always tell people just to enjoy the people and the scenery.

  • Roger ~

Thank you for the recommendations - I am planning on doing both of these..

Also understandable about not doing research in Ireland.  In fact, it was my hope to find ways to maximize the opportunity to enjoy the people and scenary. It would be wonderful to connect in some way with a distant relative, but I do understand most folks cannot 'interrupt" their day to help a wayward American with his ancestroy quest.  I would be happy to have a glimpse of what my ancestors saw and experienced so long ago...

Thank you greatly for your current and past help!  Much appreciated!

  • Roger,

I'm up against the proverbial "brick wall" and wondered if you had any recommendations.  My 2 x GF is John Kenny (b. 1838 d. 1920) married Catherine Connaughton (1864) and had 15 children (have accounted for all) and they lived in Tonroe or Feenagh townlands, Kilmnamanagh Parish, Elphin...

Problem is his FATHER - also I believe John Kenny, who I further believe married Serah Dowd in Croghan in 1831 - with a baptism of John in 1838 in Tibohine - Fairymount.  Tithe Applot. has a John Kenny 1833 and Griffiths (58) has John Kenny at Tonroe or Feenagh... (Local Churches - St Brigids and St Attradta were built later)

There are multiple Kenny families within a short radius of Tonroe or Feenagh (especially Tiboihine / Loughglinn, etc.)

Irish naming convention don't help because even when I find a sparce record it is in isolation (and, of course every Kenny family has a John)...

    Any thoughts / suggestions?

P.s I am also doing DNA testing but that doesn't seem promising at this point - Y-111 (done) Big Y 700/SNP (pending)
