Hello
Im trying to find out about my x4 great grandfather Owen Mckenna born apparently abt 1804 Arragon, Monoghan, died abt 1848 Monoghan.

She married an Elizabeth (surname unknown) abt 1820

Elizabeth moved to Australia at some point.

If possible i was wanting to know the name of Owens parents & whether he had any siblings.

This may be an impossible task

Thank you

Nathaniel

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

If Owen was from Aghnamullen civil parish then RC records will not be available back to the early part of the 19th century. I did find an Owen McKenna in Derrygooney townland in the 1829 Tithe listings for Aghnamullen civil parish. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587395/00…

I could not locate a townland called Arragon anywhere in Co. Monaghan.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hello Nathaniel,

My great-grandfather, Patrick McCoy, emigrated from Co. Monaghan in 1864 to New York at the age of 17, enlisted in the Union Army and later moved to Pawtucket, RI. His father was Bernard McCoy (married to Rose), and we're pretty sure Patrick was from Aghnamullen, as his grave stone in the River Point section of Warwick, RI says exactly that. Bernard (familiarly Ben???) died in 1866.

I'd need to go back and double-check, but when Patrick became a US citizen in 1888, an Owen McKenna vouched for him. If you check the census information posted on Ancestry for Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, you'll turn up multiple Owen McKennas in different generations, together with their families stretching from the state census in 1875 up through 1930 -- and maybe further back. Pawtucket was a major textile center.

I hope this information is helpful to you in your search.
