Hi Ireland outreach, cavan,

I was wondering if you had any info on JANE ROBERTS' parents. JANE was my gg grandmother.

Jane was born 19 nov 1846 cavan, county cavan.

Jane and her husband SAMUEL NICHOL emmigrated to New Zealand in 1884 and so that's how I have irish ancestors:)

Her parents names were James Roberts and Sarah Mitchell.

Could someone please be able to find out when they were born ,and when they passed away ,and when they got married ,and where they were born ,and where married ,and where passed away.

My Irish ancestors are a bit of a mystery. I'm proud of my irish heritage:)

Thank you very much for your help.I would be grateful for any information you have:)

  • Dear Caitriona:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I have found a transcription of your great-great grandmother's marriage record to Samuel Nichol.

    It states the following:

They were married on 10 September 1884 in Cavan  in the Church of Ireland.

Both were over 21 years of age.

Samuel Nichol was a Shop Assistant residing on Main Street, Cavan who had not been married before.  His father's name was:  Robert Nichol.

Jane was also residing on Main Street, Cavan and she had not been married before.  Her occupation was not given.  Her father's name was:  James Roberts.

Witnesses to this wedding were:  W.H. Robert and John Wooly.

Some of the parish registers are available through Roots Ireland under the name of Cavan (Church of Ireland) however it would appear that these records are from the late 1800s.

From a quick look, it would appear that Jane's family had a shop in Cavan.

You might also check the Civil Registration records through the Irish Genealogy website (which is free). The Marriage Record above should be on the website.

    The website address is: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Jane

Thanks for welcoming me to Ireland Reaching out,

Sorry I just got your message since my computer has been getting fixed.

Thank you for the Information on Jane and Samuel's Marriage.

I found it in the Irish genealogy website and it is amazing to see:)

How were you able to find out Jane's family had a shop in Cavan?

I had a look at the irish genealogy link you sent me and since the Births don't go back any earlier than 1864 I tried to look up some death records.

There is a Sarah Roberts Born about 1824 and passes away 1912 and a James Roberts who was born about 1804 and passes away 1877. I'm not sure that these are Jane's parents.

I did find one thing: Hannah, Jane's younger sister was born about 1852 and passed away 1932 , she was a retired Merchant.

I also found Hugh Roberts Born about 1798 passes away 1888. He was a farmer and I think Hugh is the name of James father since his first son was named Hugh. I'm not sure this Hugh, is James' father.

This is a list of Jane's Brothers and Sisters

Sarah, hugh, John, jane*, james, jerimiah, william, hannah, thomas, robert,Joseph, harriet, lizzie, mary, margaret.

That's 15 children and it is all correct, I wonder what happened to them whether they stayed in Ireland or went to New Zealand or maybe America?

Are there any other places that have Birth and Marriage records for Cavan going back to 1700's ?

Thanks again for your help, I will have a look at irish roots as well:)

  • Hi Jane

I just had a look at Irish roots website.

It looks like I does have some birth records going back to 1800 and a few that are 1700.

I was wondering do I need to know which parish my ancestor was born in to find them or can I just type in their name and date.

I think I will subscribe to this irish roots if they have some info that I'm after:)

    Thanks for your help,

  • Hi Catriona,

I just came across your message today while browsing the Ireland-xo website.

I believe we may be related and that the Margaret in the list of siblings of your great-great-grandmother is my great-grandmother. Her parents were also named James and Sarah (albeit that her maiden name was Pritchard, not Mitchell), and the names of her siblings are very similar - I have documentary evidence for Sarah, Hugh, Jane, James, William, Hannah, Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Harriet and Mary and unconfirmed references to John and Jeremiah. The only name missing from my list of Margaret's siblings is Lizzie, although I have an unconfirmed reference to another sister named Alice, who could be the same person.

I have quite a lot of information on where the siblings whose identities I have been able to verify ended up.

    Regards,

  • Hi Derek,

It is definitely possible Sarah's maiden name was Pritchard and that would explain why I haven't been able to find her.

I would be very interested in seeing your info on where the Siblings who identities you have been able to verify ended up. I will share with you the info I have got so far.

If you find it easier to send info using email ( i find it easier ) here is my email luthien27@live.co.uk
