My G.G.Grandfather was a James McCooey who married Catherine Conlon on 29th August 1833 in Tallanstown County Louth. All of their children were born in Haggardstown.  Hugh McCoy.

Hi Hugh,

Glad to hear from you... do you know who James McCooey's father was or any of his siblings?

I've kind of cobbled together some relatives - I know that Ann's parents were Patrick McCooey and Mary Neacy...

and I've found a Brian McCooey and Mary Lurcan that appear in the right place and the right time... to maybe be Patrick McCooey's parents

   I've also found the following children for them...

Felix m. Ann McCabe

Bernard m. Judith ???

Bridget McCooey m. Owen Mulholland

James McCooey

Margaret McCooey b.Sept 29 1780  Haggardstown

Patrick - Ann's father

Rose b. Nov 18 1786  Haggardstown

Hello Lynda, I know nothing of James McCooeys father but looking at some of my notes i am pretty sure that James had a brother called Felix. My McCooey/McCoy clan left Haggardstown and moved to Ardee where i am originally from. My G.Grandfather Bernard or someone else changed surname from McCooey to McCoy. My late father Patrick McCoy who passed away last year 90 years young told me about Haggardstown.He also told me that Felix owned a pub.I have a lot more information about my McCoys.Its really from James McCooey onwards. I will be glad to help in any way. Hugh.

I couldn't find that in the records BUT WHAT I did find was a James HOEY and Catherine Conlon:

Hello Lynda, no not James Hoey.Found the marriage of James McCooey and Catherine Conlon in an old parish register a good few years ago. For some reason i did not get his or her parents. Will have to check that out. My G.Grandfather Bernard McCooey married Catherine Matthews on 14th February 1863 in Ardee County Louth. My Grandfather was Owen McCoy 1874 to 1962,he married Rose Anne Lynch 1897 to 1985.They married in Ardee on 26th August 1920. My father Patrick McCoy 1927 to 2017 married Dymphna Gordon 1929 to 1998 in November 1953 in Ardee. As i said originally from Ardee but now married and living about 15 miles south of Dublin City. Can i ask what your connection is  to the Mccooey/McCoy clan. All the best Hugh.

Good Morning Hugh,

Thank you for the information on your ancestral line of McCooey/McCoys...

My connection with Ann McCooey is that she is my husband's gg-grandmother.

Ann McCooey m. James Logan - also from Ireland but no luck with his particular family just yet...

Not sure if they married over in Ireland OR did they meet in Philadelphia, PA and marry there.

Ann McCooey and James Logan always lived in Philadelphia, PA and all of their 6 children were born there...

They only had one child/son who lived into adulthood and married - Thomas F.J. Logan - hubby's g-grandfather.

Thomas m. Mary McGlone (who was born in Ireland of an Irish father and a German mother).

Thomas and Mary had 6 sons and 1 daughter... son Edward Francis Logan was hubby's grandfather,

his son Edward Francis Logan Jr is still living at age 96 in North Carolina and hubby is

Edward Francis Logan III - 71 (will be 72 in January) and we live in West Virginia where all of my family has lived for

over 200 years now...

Again, thank you for your names and spouses, as that helps me to know that I'm on the right track with Patrick McCooey's

family...

Will keep in touch and share any further information that I locate...

Hello Lynda,just looking at 1880 u.s. census for Philadelphia. It gives James and Ann Logan plus children in house number 2125. Just above them  on census roll in house number 2127 are Mary and Margaret McCooey. I thinkthey are Ann's sisters.

Hi Hugh, Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. Yes Mary and Margaret McCooey were Ann's sisters.  They had an older sister Bridget who had already passed away before I first saw Mary, Margaret and Kate living with James and Annie in the 1870 census and listed as sisters in law...  That was how I first leanred about Annie's maiden name of McCooey...       Kate passed away in 1873 so that's why you only see Mary and Margaret in the 1880.

Now here's something interesting for you... Thomas Logan, James and Ann's oldest son and only child out of 6 to survive longer than his early 20's and their only child to get married... inherited both of those units when Ann passed away in 1914.  The units were 3 stories high and part of Philadelphia's famous rowhouses... which are now preserved and privately owned in the Historic district of Philadelphia.  There is no 2127 now but a rather large unit at 2125... I don't know if Thomas combined them or just when that happened but a nice guy looked them up for me when I mentioned that 2127 was no longer there...

He found them listed in the deed books or tax records... as 2125-2127 Cypress... and in 2006 the unit sold for $1.6 million.   I wonder what James and Annie would think about that??!!

I still haven't located any parents for James Logan yet.  I've had my hubby's  BigY 700 y-DNA test done but he has no matches at his terminal SNP which is:   R-BY11124.  

Hopefully, someday I'll find our Logan connection just like I've found Annie's McCooey, Neacy and Mulholland.

Hello Linda,Haggardstown in Louth is a very small village even by Irish standards. I have no doubt that my G.Grandfather Bernard and Ann were related.I would stick my neck out and say that they were brother and sister.Bernard was born in 1834 in Haggardstown as were all of his children including my Grandfather,Owen. He died in Ardee Workhouse on February 16th 1908. All the best Hugh.

I am quite sure that your G-grandfather - Bernard   and ED's gg-grandmother -  Ann McCooey were related but they weren't brother and sister... of that I am quite sure...  I know all of Ann's siblings and I know that Ann's parents were Patrick McCooey and Mary Neacy...

Did some searching on Rootsweb Ireland (where I have a membership)  and I found something very interesting back in 1755 Birth Records for County Louth:

Hello Lynda, you are perfectly right about Ann and Bernard. Possibly cousins. The twins that you mentioned Bernard and Patrick,well my Grandfather Owen had brothers who were twins,Bernard and John born in 1882. All those christian names Bernard,James,John,Patrick,Mary,Ann,Margaret,Catherine are all in every generation on my family tree. Hugh.

Hi, all! I am researching my Irish ancestors who came over through Canada and settled in Kansas in 1881. The story goes that Margaret (Maggie) McCooey, Rose and their little sister, Katherine (who is my great great grandmother) lost their parents and took their small inheritance and used it to come over to the states. 

Their parents were Felix McCooey and Anne Ryan. I have seen one catholic register that lists her as Anne McCann, but on all others, she is Anne Ryan so I am not sure what to make of that. The last name Ryan was also confirmed because the girls chose Kansas due to the fact that their uncle with the last name Ryan (Anne's brother) had already been living there so they moved in with him for a while. 

I am REALLY struggling to make sense of the McCooey ancestry. This thread indicates a name change, which would make sense. This thread also mentions Felix McCooey and I'm wondering if that's the same Felix as my GGG Grandfather. I know this thread is old, but we have a family reunion in a few weeks and I'd love to have more details to share with the family. Also, I do believe we are all cousins! 

I hope this reaches someone who can help me understand why I'm hitting so many brick walls with Felix and Anne.

Hi Cousin in TX,

Ann McCooey was my husband's gg-grandmother and she married James Logan.  They immigrated through the Port of Philadelphia and settled there in one of the NOW Historical Philadelphia Row Houses.  The first census that I found them all in was 1870 and there are 3 single women living with them listed as sister-in-law... and that is how I found Annie's maiden name...

I know that Annie's parents were Patrick McCooey   b. 1783  d. 1868?  and Mary Neacy  b. 1795  d. ??  They were married about 1820.

I've tried to fit some of the McCooey family together just by looking at the records.  I tried to attach a copy of their family but it won't let me...

Can't wait to compare notes...

This is wonderful! I was worried that this thread was too old and you'd never see it! Thank you for such a quick response! When is a good time to call you? I do think it would make this much easier. 

In the meantime, here is what I know and how I assume my branch meets your husbands..

My Felix McCooey (1830-1875) married Anna Ryan (1825-1865) (her parents are Andrew Ryan and Elizabeth Mary Dwyer-Loughran). 

Felix McCooey and Anne Ryan's children:

Thomas (1855-?) Family lore has it that Thomas died around age 21, so around 1876? Godparents: Pat and Rose McCooey. I'm assuming Pat is one of Felix's siblings? 

Michael (1857-?) : His godparents are listed as Matthew Morgan and Mary McKeown : I'm wondering if that was supposed to be Mary McCooey but the handwriting was illegible?

Margaret "Maggie" (1860-1954) :no godparents listed. I'm confused on this one. The only account of her birth is the Catholic Parish Register and what's strange is that it lists her father as Felix McCooe and her mother as Mary Anne McCann. The birthday also isn't the same as the one listed on her death certificate so I'm thinking this is a different Margaret. However, I cannot find any other Margaret McCooe born to a Felix and Anne. Could she be a half sibling? Maybe there's another Felix in the family?

Rose (1863-1944) :  Godparents are listed as Thomas McCann and Anne McCooey--could this be your Anne? perhaps Felix's sister? Not sure how Thomas McCann is related but strange considering there's a Mary Ann McCann listed as the mother of a Margaret McCooe born to a Felix McCooey

Katherine "katie" (my namesake and my GG grandmother): (1865-1942) Godparents are listed as Peter Crilly and Ellen Morgan

All siblings were registered in Ireland at Dromintee, Armagh Upper Foughill Diocese

In Maggie McCooe Wendlings obituary, it states that Maggie was the oldest of her sisters and when both parents died, she packed up her little sisters and took the small inheritance left to her and came to the US. I'm still not sure if this meant her brothers had also passed away, but I assume she would not take their parents inheritance and leave her brothers behind, leading me to believe her brothers were gone as well.They arrived in 1881 on the ship Moravian into Quebec and made their way down to live with their Uncle James Ryan in Halstead, KS. They settled there and most stayed, but Katie moved to TX, where all of her descendants still reside and many are still farming. :) 

I suppose there could also be a chance that her brother without a death date could've already been married when they chose to leave, rather than having died, but I can't find him anywhere beyond his baptism record. 

Katie and Maggie ended up marrying brothers so they both had the married name of Wendling. Rose married and took the last name Wright. 

My mom took a trip to Ireland in the 80's and met some very old McCooey ancestors living in a shack with dirt floors. She said this house was at the tip of ireland called "tip of the world" or something? She said she remembers them being so old, so tiny and they had jet black hair. She was on this "ancestry" trip with her mom and was bored most of the time so she said she really wasn't interested in family history and can't remember many details. 

I just wanted you to have this information so you might be able to piece the puzzle together with what you know. I have my DNA submitted to both ancestry and 23 and me. If your husband does, I might show up as a distant cousin!
