Born in 1784 Timothy, a labourer, served in the Royal Artillery as a Gunner from November 1803 to 1814. His military discharge papers state he was from "Killicon in Carrickshannon Roscommon". I would like to find his birth/baptism record.

His pension was paid via the Roscommon district from 1814 so he returned to his home county - I'd like to know whereabouts.

Timothy left Ireland, his pension being transferred to UK Wolverhampton district in June 1846

The UK 1851 census indicates that prior to leaving Ireland Timothy married Winifred who was also born in Ireland Circa 1795.

They had a least one child also called Timothy born circa 1823, in Ireland - later census records state Roscommon.

I wonder if there is a record of Timothy and Winifred's marriage and also the baptism of young Timothy?

When the family left Ireland in June 1846, young Timothy didn't waste time in finding a wife as the same 1851 census shows him with wife Margaret (born 1828 Stockport) and 2 sons born in Dudley - John born circa 1848 and another Timothy born 1849. I have seen an RC baptism record in Dudley for a Timothy Salmon whose parents are named as Timothy Salmon and Margaret nee McDermott but cannot be certain the dates tally with the census birth date.

I'd like to know if anyone has information about the Salmon family in the Carrick on Shannon area

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and located a February 5th 1823 baptismal record in the Croghan RC parish for a Thaddy Salmon with father Thaddy Salmon and mother Winifred Foley. I did not find a marriage record and possibly Winifred’s home parish does not have records back to 1823.

Thaddeus and Timothy were the same name  https://www.libraryireland.com/names/men/tadhg-teige.php

The Killicon location would likely be the civil parish of Killukin close to Boyle. The town of Carrick on Shannon lies partially in Roscommon and partially in Leitrim. the Roscommon side would be in Killukin civil parish.

  • Hello Roger

Thank you for your prompt reply and warm welcome. That information is very helpful. I and my cousin plan to visit Roscommon next year to visit places our ancestors came from so this is very useful.

    Kind regards

  • Dear Cath

    I found them!

What luck ... Timothy & Winifred Salmon baptised a daughter during the only year a Killucan priest bothered to record an address in this parish!

They began raising a family in the townland Tullyleague, just west of Carrick-on-Shannon.  You can be confident this is where Timothy Jr was born too. Sadly the house is no longer extant but I was able to trace their move west to the district of Frenchpark / Loughlynn where they lived in the 1830s until they moved to England in 1846.

I have posted full details to your ancestor chronicle for Timothy Salmon in Killukin

Also, please join the IrelandXO Tumna civil parish and the IrelandXO Tibohine civil parish (and link his Chronicle there too) to hopefully find out more before your trip!
