Patrick Byrne was born in the year 1817 at Ballyvaghan Union in County Clare, Ireland. His parents were Edward Byrne and Winifred (nee Delany) His home was located in the Townland of Gleninagh, Ireland. Patrick married Catherine Hycope of County Longford Ireland on 28th August 1843 in Manchester, Lancaster, England. In 1840 he enlisted with the 65th Yorkshire Regiment and was sent to New Zealand on the Ship Robert Peel in 1847. He was accompanied by his wife Catherine and infant son Edward. He participated in the early land wars against the Maori people in New Zealand and for his efforts was given some land to farm on the outskirts of Wanganui Town in New Zealand.
