I'm looking for more information on the family of John McCormack, Carrowkeel, Elphin, Co. Roscommon. I know who he married and their children but have had problems tracing further back.
He was born circa 1855 and his father, who I have located in Griffiths Valuation, was also called John. I haven't been able to find a death record for his father but I know he was dead by 1888, when he is mentioned as so on his sons marriage cert. I have had leads on John's mother but I've never been totally sure. There is a possibility her maiden name could have been Lynch- they were a family living beside the McCormacks in Carrowkeel who were godparents for several of John Jr's children. One of them, Michael Lynch trained John's younger son as a blacksmith and was referred to by him as his uncle, suggesting one of John's sisters could have married a Lynch either.
I also haven't been able to find a trace of any of his siblings.

I know John's father, John Sr was born in 12 Sep 1824 to Tom McCormack and Mary Martin but also have never been able to locate any of his siblings either.

Any information on the people in John's family and what happened to them would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Alicia

  • Hi Alicia!

Roots Ireland had an 1810 record for a Catherine McCormack who appears to be an older sister to John. I also included John's baptismal record transcription.

  • Thanks Roger!

I think the John McCormack born 12 Sep 1824 is the father of John Jr. Would you mind checking for marraige records for a John McCormack/McCormic/other variations around the time period 1840s, 1850s in Elphin parish and if there were many children for them around that period?

  • Alacia,

Have you the record for the Farrell family from Clooneybrennan. She married McCormac from Carrowkeel and her father moved down there and gave his farm to a daughter who married Donnaghty who took over the farm. That Lynch forge was at Carrowkeel cross.

  • Hi Sean

I found out through research a while ago that the John McCormack Jr I mentioned above married a Mary Jane McDermott from Clooneybrennan and her father John McDermott gave his farm to his son in law Edward Donaghy before moving down to Carrowkeel where he lived for his last few years. I've never found any mention of any Farrells. Are you related to the Farrells or McDermotts?

    Thanks,

    Alicia

  • Alicia:

The only John McCormack marriage in Elphin RC parish was in 1888.

  • Xlicia,

You were absolutly right. I mixed up the McDermotts with the Farrells. Those MacDermotts lived  beside where the Rocks lived in Clooneybrennan. One daughter married Kennedy in Tanseyfield, a stonemason and the trade was passed on to his sons, Jerome and Luke. Another married Farrell in Clooneybrennan, Another (Bridget) married Keely beside where ye have land in Clooneybrennan. Another inherited the home farm and Donaghty married  her. Then another married McCormick of Carrowkeel, your people. That traces 5 daughters, 4 of whom married within 500mts of where they were born. Thats Irish social history.

Isn't it peculiar that your great grand-father married a MacDermot( a sister of Patrick MacDermot) also from Clooneybrennan while his brother Eamonn or Ned the blacksmith, married her niece. These are the MacDermots where Tommie Joe lives.

Note. Marriages are usually recorded in the brides parish. Also, Creeve parish was a part of a half parish with Bohero which had one church at Ryefield and the other at present Creeve. I think there were just 4 townlands in the Creeve half. I gave the school attendance roll for the 'School in the lane' to the school here in Elphin and the pupils were listed with their father's  and the mother's names and if you were lucky the mother's maiden name might be included. Creeve school was built in 1890 but the school in the lane opened about 1860 and my role book ran for about 30 years.

Before those two half parishes were formed the old Creeve was part of Clooncraff parish which came all the way in to Kinard townland.

  • Hi, I just bumped into the exchange between Alicia McCormack and Sean Neary.

Believe it or not, my great-uncle Edward (Ned) McCormack's widow Mary McDermott McCormack, by all accounts a lovely lady, passed away only two years ago.  My sister was fortunate to have visited with her when she traveled to Ireland in 2013 (I think that's the correct date).  Here is a link to her obit.

  • Hi Ray,

So, what was your grandfathers name, I'm presuming he was a McCormick.

  • Hi Sean

Actually, it was my grandmother who was a McCormack.  She was the youngest child of John McCormack and Mary Jane McDermott of Carrowkeel--christened Annie Jane, she went by Anna after migrating to the US.  Along with her sisters Julia and Katherine and her brother James, these sibings all came over in the years just before WW1.  They all settled in New York city, and my mom was fortunate to be near her McCormack cousins (James and his wife Nora Conboy had four girls; Katherine and Timothy Gannon had two sons who eventually re-located to California; and my Mom was one of two daughters of Anna and Martin Monaghan).  Julia married Frank Donner late in life and never had children.

    Best, Ray Keogh

  • Hello . My sister & her husband have a house & farm in Carrowkeel. I have just spoken to her & she informed me that a Young Man called Thomas McCormack lives there in Carrowkeel. Perhaps if you write to him directly at Carrowkeel, Elphin, Co . Roscommon. Incidentally my GAunt was a Mrs Dufficy. . Good Luck on your research.Una.
