  • Hugh and Eleanor  Gallagher were my great great grandparents.

Their daughter Margaret born 1863 Toam, married Patrick Kelly Sept 1882 in Burt  RC, witnesses John Mc Daid and Giles Gallagher. Margaret and Patrick moved to Scotland  where her brother Peter lived in Dumbartonshire.

Margaret  had 5 children  Sarah, Hugh, Mary Teresa, Bridget ,and Eveline.

The Gallaghers were still in Toam in the  late 1960/ early 70's -  two brothers Hughie and Johnie.  I believe John was called Johnie Jondy!  I visited about 10 years ago and the house in Toam at that time was in a sad state or repair.I wonder if it still belongs to a Gallagher?

  • Hello Eilean - how wonderful to hear from you! Hugh and Ellen (Eleanor) were my GG Grandparents also. I would love to connect and to share details on our common lineage if possible as I have found that my Gallagher research has been painfully slow and difficult over the years - especially from the other side of the world. How can I best get in touch with you?

  • Hello, I am wondering if we are connected. My Gallagher family were from Toome. I was there in 1969, hope to go again this year.  I have posted a picture of my great grandfather, Hugh Gallagher 1859-1936 on this site, waiting for the site to approve it. His wife was Catherine McGarvey, they had 11 surviving children. Their 3rd child was my grandfather Patrick Gallagher. Would be very interested to connect and share info and hear more from your side. Thank you Kathy

  • Hello Kathy - thank you for your comments. Whilst my Gallagher related info from the mid-1850's is pretty sketchy to say the least, if you have Gallagher connections to Toome then I would say that it is more than a pretty fair bet that our Gallagher lines are related/interwined. From the information I have my GG Grandfather Hugh Gallagher had a large family and had a son also named Hugh. Other than the name, I have no other information about this particular Hugh Gallagher. However, deducing a likely date of birth (from those of his known siblings) it is likely that he was born circa 1859 and if so he could well be your G Grandfather. That would make him my GG Uncle if I am not mistaken.

So - yes, we could well be connected and I would most definitely be very interested in comparing notes and the results of our combined research. I have found my Gallaghers the most elusive and frustrating people to research and I have drawn so many blanks over the years!! I am very much looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello Kathy and Leagle

Leagle and I share the G G grandad Hugh Gallagher. I would agree with Leagle , if your family are from Toome  then it is likely we are related.  My G gran was Margaret Gallagher, daughter of Hugh.

Where was the Toome that you visited?  Was it  south of Donegal Town going towards Belleeck?

The Toome our family are from is north west Donegal near Creeslough  or the village of Glen. Toome in this area was a small hamlet and the spelling  frequently changes, Toam, Toomb, Toamb, on the 1901 census it is  Drumlackagh.

    Regards

  • Thank you Eilean - I believe you are quite correct - Toome (with all of its various spelling options!) is close to the village of Glen and really no longer exists as a village or hamlet (there are just a few houses there now). I have visted a number of times. Technically, Toome is in the Townland of Drumlackagh (near to the Lackagh River and Lackagh Bridge). The original Gallagher plot of land is a narrow strip which runs down to Glen Lough. Another plot of Gallagher land is immediately adjacent to Lackagh Bridge and is currently owned by Linda Gallagher - widow of my 4th cousin Neil Gallagher.

Eilean - are we able to compare notes sometime?

    Cheers,

    Leagle.

  • Thank you Eilean and Leagle for all the information. I believe we are from the Toome in North West Donegal. My grandmother was from "across the river" at Carrigart.

    Putting together what you've both said our Great Great Grandparents -  Hugh Gallagher 1830 - married - Eleanor (Ellen) and had;

Sarah, Margaret, Peter, Hugh and others?? it would be good to understand where the names Linda and Neil fit)

I'm on Ancestry and GED Match and happy to share my tree so you can see all the info I have so far on my Great Grandparents and their offspring and descendents. I'm in touch with 4 other descendents found via DNA testing who are my 2/3 cousins. My Great Grandad Hugh died in Toome in 1936 and his son Jeremiah remained in Toome until he died in 1965. As I have been unable to trace any info on 5 out of the 11 of my Great Aunts/Uncles,, I don't know if those 5 remained in the area or left like the others.

Whatever is easiest for you to share info, let me know. I am new to this research so advise what's best for you. I am hoping to go to Donegal in August and would be great to connect with Linda.

I live in England are you both in Ireland or elsewhere?? Great to meet you. Kind regards Kathy

  • Eilean and Legale, I've also posted on this site the details of my Grandparents and their offspring, but for some reason it hasn't been listed in the Mevagh parish page.
