Frybrook House (b. 1743) is a Georgian residence with a rich sense of history and possibly one of Boyle's finest. It is one of the few grand properties in Boyle to have survived intact. Featuring Palladian windows and a pedimented doorcase, a house of this size and date is also notable for its absence of a basement. The house is a protected structure.

It was built by Henry Fry Esq.  a merchant from Edenderry, who established a weaving industry in the town in 1742.  His descendants Henry Fry Jr. Esq. of Frybrooke and Henry Fry Esq. of Fairyhill (Knockashee) were founding members of the Agricultural and Commercial Bank in Boyle in 1835.

Henry Fry Esq. (c.1701-1786) was the son of John Fry & Anne Harrington of Edenderry, Co Offaly (see also the famous artist Thomas Frye of Edenderry). The Frys originated from Beckington Somerset [Burke] and grave markers for 17th-century ancestors can be found at Monasterois Cemetery.

Henry came to Boyle on the invitation of Lord Kingston in 1742. From 1743, Henry Fry Esq. & Mary Fuller of Clara, Co Offaly had the following children:

    •    (TWIN) John Fry Esq. (d. 1796) had a brewery at Fairyhill aka Knockashee, Boyle. His son, Henry Fry Esq. of Fairyhill m. 1830 Alicia Knott of Atteville/Abbeville Co. Sligo (d.1855).

    •    (TWIN) Ann Fry m. John Knott.

    •    Mary Fry m. Thomas Irwin (d.1808) of Camlin (eldest son of John Irwin Esq.)

    •    Sarah Fry.

In 1752, Henry Fry Esq. married Catherine Mills (d.1786) of Knockhall Co Roscommon and had the following children:

    •    Henry Fry Jr. (1757-1847) of Frybrook m. 1784 Elizabeth Baker of Lismcue Co Tipperary.  Registered a freehold of £50 with lands at Knockarush in 1829. See also Navarino House.

    •    Edward Harrington Fry of Frybrook m. 1793 another Catherine Mills of Knockhall Co Roscommon (1st cousin). Registered a freehold of £20 with lands at Farranagalliagh in 1829.

    •    Catherine Fry (d.1840) m.c. 1774 Arthur Irwin of Willowbrook, Co Sligo

    •    Oliver Fry (1773 - 1868) m. 1806 Mary Phibbs of Bloomfield Co. Sligo

    •    Jane (Fry) m. 1808 the Rev. Stephen Lyster of Boyle

"Frybrooke" then became the seat of Henry's second youngest son Henry Fry II (1757-1847) High Sherriff 1797 m. Elizabeth Baker ...  who passed the property to his eldest son Henry Fry III (1785-1854) m. Elizabeth Roe  ... who passed the property to their son Robert Roe Fry Esq. (1822-1902) who married his first cousin Sara Fry of Navarino House, and passed the property to their son to the banker John Robert Fry (1869-1933) who married Mabel White (d.1904) who passed the property to their son Robert Henry Roe Fry (1904-1973) also a banker.   It was sold in 1981. Frybrook Lodge remained the home of Dick Fry who applied to Roscommon CoCo in 1984 for re-roofing and provision of sanitary facilities.

By 1840, the mill and offices were recorded as being "an old concern" with about one-third of the out-buildings in use and the rest in a bad state of repair. The house remained in good condition as a residence and was valued at £28.

In 1857, at the time of Griffith's Valuation, Frybrook House [GV#10 Mocmoyne - Bridge Street] & offices were valued at £22.

At the time of the 1901 Census, 15 rooms at Frybrook were occupied by the family.

Frybrook House, a popular heritage attraction, was run as a bed and breakfast in the early 2000s.  In 2015 it was offered on the open market for £309,000 – with  6 acres of land, 4 houses on an adjoining street and a “period building” housing the Stonehouse Café

Frybrook house and gate lodge (Frybrook Lodge) went on the market again in 2017, on behalf of a receiver.  Frybrook was sold in 2018 to a German buyer (for €350,000) who plans to develop it into a high-specification guest house.

  • My grandmother was a Fry. Her grandfather, Rev Henry Fry of Corbally Church, Roscrea, was descended from the Frybrook Frys.

  • If you are referring to Henry and Eleanor Fry who are buried in Richmond Hill (1864 and 1860), yes, Henry was my 1st cousin 5 times removed.

  • Here's what I have for the Fry's in Ontario. Have you noticed, there are five placenames, Frybrook, in the Toronto area? I can only explain the one in Richmond Hill (your Henry?). Do you have any idea who is linked to them? There is an interesting Frybrook Rd just west of Upper Canada College. Perhaps it would be a good riddle for the genealogists at Ireland XO to figure who moved and where did they come from.

  • Oh, also: I'm studying the Orange Order in the Ottawa area. Do you know how much they were involved. I know William Ormsby Fry and his wife lived beside Orange Valley Rd, and to misquote Rua, I don't think they were refering to orange juice. ;-)

  • We obviously share the same Fry family. My research of he Canada Frys matches your list fairly well. The Frys in Ireland were certainly on the 'Orange' side. I don't know how active they were in Canada.

Frybook House was recently sold and it may be turned into an upmarket guest house. Several lots of Frys emigrated to Canada so it is perhaps not surprising that the name Frybrook occurs in different places.

My records show Major Henry Fry (c1793-1864) married Eleanor Blake (c1799-1860) in about 1821.

James Farquharson MacLeod, Jane Fry's son, was the founder of Calgary.

  • We might want to share sources off the Ireland XO board. I don’t feel really comfortable with some of the speculative links I’ve made about the Ontario Fry’s, especially since the Ireland XO genealogist found a couple of serious errors on my tree! Me email is deswarou@videotron.ca

  • Hi Russell

Thanks for getting back to me. I assumed you were from Canada, given you knowledge of this bunch of Fry's. Oops.

You're right. Henry Fry (1821-1884) may be unrelated to our Fry's. He seems to come from Co. Cavan.

Henry Fry (1794-1864) seems to have been with the ruling elite. He was a "gentlemand" and his son a "yeoman" according to the censuses, and he was involved in some highly political court cases.

  • There are five street names in North America named for Frybrook.

According to Kathie Forbes on WikiTree, the Frybrook Drive in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, is named for a stream that runs beside it, Fry Brook. There Frys from England who were early settlers in Rhode Island. There is also a Frye's Corners

Reaction: I find it too much of a coincidence that some British settlers in the US would just pick up the name Fry Brook, but I'll accept that answer for now. (You can see the street on Google Maps.

  • There are five street names in North America named for Frybrook (continued).

One is in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, 50 km east of Toronto. I have found a Charles Fry, born c 1820 in Ireland, who farmed in Whitby Township in 1851. He was on Concession IV lot 10. This is the exact location of today's street.

Unfortunately the trail runs dry there. I cannot place this particular Charles Fry on the Fry family tree.
