I am excited to join a group dedicated to Irish Ancestry. I live in NYC and have Irish ancestors from many counties. One is John M Gallagher, and I believe he was born in Dublin City 1841-1843. He came to NYC in either 1861 or early 1862, as he enlisted in a Civil War regiment. He said he was 19. I know from information discovered in NYC that he was connected to a Samuel Dale, who was born on Aungier St around 1839. Many of the Dale family lived there. I do not know John’s father’s name, but he named his oldest son John Henry so I am wondering about one of these names being his father’s. I wonder if anyone has suggestions as to sources for research? Joan Gallagher Holmes

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The best resource for Dublin city church records is the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie (Church Record TAB) I did a quick search from 1840-1845 and there were a couple John Gallager baptismal records but not with a father John. There are a few in the period 1835-1839.
I saw the record for Samuel Dale in 1839 and his baptism was at St. Peter's Church of Ireland. Does that mean that John Gallagher was Church of Ireland also or they were just friends?
If he was born outside the city then we will have to search the subscription site Roots Ireland.
Let us know.
Please post John's story to our XO Chronicles site and maybe someone will see a connection. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

I recently replied to a person named Virginia on the IGP Dublin Facebook page about this same person - unfortunately without further details such as names of parents or siblings or a more detailed place of birth e.g. parish, it's going to be difficult to locate a good possible match for 'your' John Gallager or his family.
John was born well before the start of civil records, i.e. birth certs, so a search of Church Baptism records would be required. Many of the records for the Catholic and Church of Ireland city parishes are available as images & searchable transcripts on the free IrishGenealogy website, which also has some records for Catholic parishes in the south east of the county. The National Library of Ireland has images of most of the Catholic Parishes in Ireland, and these are searchable on FindMyPast and Ancestry.
A search of Catholic registers covering Dublin city & county showed a number of John Gallagher baptisms (assuming your John was RC) in Dublin city and county around that time. Ages were not always reported accurately in later documents, so its best to allow at least 5 years either way when searching.
John Galagher bapt. Feb 1843 St. Catherine's RC, parents James & Ellen
John Galagher, bapt. Oct 1845, St. Nicholas RC (Francis St.) parents James Galagher & Mary Kearns
John Galaher bapt. Feb 1844, St Paul's RC parents James Galaher & Ann LambThere were no promising matches for John in the Church of Ireland records for Dublin city available on IrishGenealogy (not all historic CofI records for Dublin city survive..).

Thank you all for your thoughts. This is pretty much the info I have seen. John was RC do he must have known Samuel Dale in another capacity. Samuel says he is his guardian on the enlistment papers. The Virginia mentioned is most probably my cousin! Joan
