Francis Nolan was born in Ireland, probably in County Mayo, the son of Peter Nolan and Mary Welsh (Walsh). He married Catherine Nolan, daughter of John Nolan and Ann Honoria Daisey, in Westport in 1838.
In the mid-1840s, they emigrated to Scotland and settled in Perth. Francis worked as a coal salesman and a labourer.
