Turin Castle in Kilmaine Co. Mayo
Turin is a fine example of a Medieval square towered fortress. In the barony of Kilmaine ,a area of roughly of roughly 8 miles by eleven It was recorded in the 1580's that there were 41 castles all of which were built by the De Burgo's a very powerful Norman family who arrived in Ireland in the 13th century. They married into the local Gaelic aristocracy eventually becoming the Irish Clan of Bourke/Burke.
