I'm searching for my great-grandfather, Patrick Doherty, born around 1847 in Buncrana. His father's name was Owen and I think they were Roman Catholic. He married Ellen McGrelis (sometimes McGrellis McGrillis or McGreeliss) in Strabane in 1872. But I can't find a record of his birth - I believe early northern Ireland records are scanty?

    Yes, RC records for Co. Donegal are very hard to find pre-1850 and the church for Buncrana does not have records until the late 1850s. Civil registration of births started in 1864
