I live in Sydney Australia so difficult to visit Bruff and access records directly. My great great grandfather was a John Goodman said to be born in Bruff in 1807. His mother is listed on Ancestry as Ann Hagar Fitzgerald. He also had 3 brothers. We think that he got the surname Goodman from his stepfather who came from Leicestershire to Dublin and Enniskillen with the Leicester Militia in about 1811. It appears that they met probably in Dublin and in 1813 they had a daughter Mary Goodman in Galway. The whole family ( including the 4 boys) then returned to Leicestershire in about 1814. We can find no record of a marriage in Ireland but Ann is shown in Census records in Engalnd in 1841 onwards and listed as coming from Bruff. We know that John married in England in 1828 and became a succesful Master Tailor. We think his brothers all emigrated to the USA in the 1820's to Baltimore and New York. The only record we can find for a marriage for Ann is to a John Mahon in Limerick in about 1804 - so it may be that he was the father of the 4 boys - we do not know, but John's surname may have been registered in local records as Mahon. We understand that the name Fitzgerald is a very famous one in Bruff and indeed in Ireland, but have a problem understanding the name Hagar? It would be appreciated if anyone could throw some light on possible sources of data to research this further. My email address is petergpq@tpg.com.au if you wish to contact me direct.
Kind regards, Peter Goodman
