He was born about 1796 in County Tyrone, lived in Dromore. I don’t know his wife’s name but had three sons, John, Nicholas and Michael. He had two daughters, one named Ann. He emigrated alone through a Liverpool in 1846 to live with his three sons in Brooklyn NY. I will be traveling to Dromore in search of family in September. Can anyone share any knowledge that is available about him? Perhaps about his parish name that I could search for more info? Thank you, Marilyn McAleer

  • Just a few thoughts to get you started.  (I'm just filling in time learning about other parts of Ireland, not an official helper.)

Make sure you let the site know when you've made your arrangements so they can help you when you arrive in Ireland if they can.

Dromore is both a Parish and a Townland within the parish of Dromore.

Griffith Valuation was conducted C1860 but may give you an idea of what townlands to look for.

Quite a lot of McAleers, but very few early ones.  Only good if they were Catholic.

    ....

About 5 days ago there was a query about McAleer for Dungannon (only about 30km away from Dromore).  It may be worth you checking it out.

also has a list of townlands in Dromore, which has more townlands than the Griffiths Valuation list.

Unfortunately I think you are delving into a time frame with very few surving records, especially if they were Catholic.  There are also three other churches in Dromore, but I haven't looked into them.  Good luck.  Enjoy Ireland.

  • Hi Marilyn

Our daughter-in-law was a McAleer whose forebears came from Gortaclady, near Dungannon. We visited there a few years ago and linked up with Seamus McAleer who, although no kinship could be established, was the soul of hospitality. He even engaged a researcher to find a possible connection for us.

Seamus is the MD of a big construction company bearing his name with headquarters in Dungannon. He may be retired now, but he has sons in the business. We had dinner with his extended family whom he summoned from various parts of Tyrone to meet us. If you look him up, please pass on our best wishes.

  • There are 6 townlands in Co Tyrone named Dromore. Do you happen to know which Nicholas came from? There are 3 in Clogher parish and 1 each in Aghaloo Dromore and Arboe. So your first problem is trying to narrow that down.

The births and marriage are all long before the start of statutory registration in Ireland (1864). To trace someone before that you need to rely on church records. You haven’t said what denomination they were but I’ll assume RC. Aghaloo records start in 1846, Arboe in 1827, Dromore in 1835 & Clogher in 1856. The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

    https://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

You could search them to see if you can trace the family.

I can see a marriage for a Nicholas McAleer to Brigid Droogan on 25.11.1841 in Dromore. However they may have still been in Ireland in 1868 in which case it can’t be your family.

  • My  great grandmother was Mary McAleer born about 1852. Lived in Dromore and married my great grandfather John Hughes in 1867 in Dromore. They moved to Glasgow, Scotland in the 1890s. Mary died in 1922 and John in 1929.I don't know if Mary was related to Nicholas.
