The Balrothery Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £5,850. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 400 inmates. The Balrothery Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Balbriggan, Ballyboghill, Balscadden, Clonmethon, Donabate, Hollywood, Holmpatrick, Kilsallaghan, Kinsealy, Lusk, Malahide, and Swords.
It is believed that the Balrothery Workhouse was used to house Belgian refugees during World War I.
The Balrothery Workhouse has since been demolished and all that now remains is a few ruins on the North West outskirts of Lusk.
