Bernard O'Connell of Aughaboy and sister Rose O'Connell Hughes

I can see just one additional child with parents named Daniel O'Connell and Bridget 'Camphill', their youngest child a Joannem O'Connell (John) baptised 25h July 1859 (1st record on the left page) in the same parish as Bernard and Rose , i.e. Killoe RC parish, Ardagh Diocese Co. Longford.

Thank you so much, shanew147 and Miriam.  I would not have been able to confirm this information on my own.  I suspected that Bernard had a brother who came to America, but I did not have enough information to say it out loud.  Now I do!

It is sad that John ended up in the poor house on Staten Island.  Life for an immigrant was not easy.  Bernard had his ups and downs, too.  I will post a family history once I get the details lined up with this new information.

I still wonder about Rose, too.  Is she the Rose Hughes who stayed in Killoe and raised a family with Patrick Hughes?  I think so, but I am not quite ready to say for sure.

A death record in New York City has a Daniel O'Connell who died in 1913 at at 62, about the right age to be another son.  The mother and father's names and birthplace of Ireland match up.  He lived eight blocks north of John O'Connell on 3rd Avenue.  It might not be another son, but it is intriguing.  I will keep looking.

One frustrating thing in America is that the Irish immigrants only listed "Ireland" as the birthplace and not a specific locality.  Or, the record taker only wrote down Ireland.

Yes, the address given on the poor farm record for Daniel O'Connor is the same block of 3rd Avenue as the one listed in Daniel O'Connell's death certificate.  I am pretty darn sure that we have the right guy.

Daniel O'Connell in the USA, son of Daniel and Bridget O'Connell of Ireland, died on December 31, 1913.  He is buried in in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.  If you click on his gravestone, you can see that he is proudly identified as a native of Aughaboy Parish of Killoe Co. Longford Ireland.  Many of his family members are buried in the same place.

Hey, now I have two new great uncles.  John O'Connell and Daniel O'Connell.  Thanks!  (If you only knew how long I have been searching for my Irish roots, then you would know how happy this makes me feel).

It looks like Hughes was a popular name in Longford in the 1800's.  Yes, it looks like Rose Hughes was at her father's funeral in 1879 and then she died in 1900.  There are several Patrick Hughes in the area.  I will have to sort through them all and figure out which ones are the best matches.  

A question:  Is there a good way to find out more recent information than 1911?  I assume that Patrick and Rose Hughes had some of their children and grandchildren who stayed in the area.  However, the grandchildren would either be very very old by now or most likely they have died.  I would need to have a more recent generation.

Yes, I forget about European privacy laws.  Stricter than here in the States (and with good reason).

Here is what I have so far.  Rose O'Connell Hughes died in 1900 of influensa at age 58 or so.  A son John was present at the death, I assume he was the witness for the death certificate. She died in Elsker.  I attached the death certificate.

The census of 1901 shows a Patrick Hughes living with three adult children.  I am attaching the census record.

The census of 1911 shows a Patt Hughes living with his wife and their children in Killoe.  The ages are a bit off from the 1901 census, and so I am not sure if I have the right son Patt Hughes.  I will attach the census record.

One other thing.  I found a record in Griffeth's land records of a Patrick Hughes owning a farm in Killoe.  I will have to track that down again.  They were living on Plot 26a in Aghaboy, Killoe.  If I remember correctly, Rose's parents were both still alive at the time, which made me wonder if perhaps they were retired and living with Patrick and Rose or perhaps nearby (I could not find a Griffeth's record for Daniel or Bridget O'Connell).  I was able to figure out a main road and then count the hedgerows, and Google Maps today shows an abandoned cottage/home now being used for farm storage.

I found this in the Killoe parish church records online.  Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find it again when I run the search today.  Sigh.  I posted this awhile ago when I found the records:

"It appears that Rose stayed in Killoe and married a Patrick Hughes. They had a son Patrick Hughes on February 18 or May 12, 1868 (I see both dates in different records)."
