The Tithe Applotment Books are a vital source for genealogical research for the pre-Famine period. The manuscripts lists under the name of each townland (or sub-townland): the landholders' names, the amount of land held (in Irish plantation acres), the quality of the land (1st, 2nd class etc) and the sums to be paid in tithes. The books provide only the name of the head representative of each farm and not other family members (or partners sharing the farm). To discover other family names that may have resided in a given townland at this time, church records and Griffith's Valuation can help fill in the gap. Very often among poorer families farms were shared in a rundale clachán (a family co-operative of in-laws). Some who should have fallen liable managed to avoid the list. Urban areas were not included.

The manuscripts books for Killummod that have been digitally imaged, are from a later register updated in 1842 (just before the Great Famine). The original composition took place in 1828. The 1842 register was appraised by E. Kenney. The Tithe Commissioners by this time were Pat Browne and Horatio A Lawder. 

NOTE: The surnames and townland spellings are often very different from the standardised spellings today.
