On the 8th of Jne 1998, after receiving nominations in six categories, the Galway based Druid Theatre Company won four Tony Awards. 

The awards were for a produciton of Martin McDonagh's play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane. 

Gary Hynes became the first woman ever to win the Best Director award at the Tonys. 

The company also won awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. 

Though Druid had always been a highly respected company in Ireland, the big win at the Tonys brought them into the internatioal spotlight.
