On the 1st of January 2005, Cork officially became the European Capital of Culture.
This is part of a tradition whereby a city in Europe is declared Capita of Culture for one year. With the title come grants and the city is expected to invest the money in heritage, culture, and the arts.
Galway is the European Capital of Culture for 2020.
