Hello, I am hopeful of finding information about my grandmother's family that lived in Elphin, County Roscommon.  My grandmother was Honoria B. Bourke (Burke) born in 1869 in Elphin.  She came to America around 1893.  She had several sisgers, Delia, Mariah, a brother Stephen who was in the Royal Irish Constabulary, and another sister.  My grandmother's mother maiden name was Ratigan.  Any information would be so greatly appreciated!  Thank you very much, Elaine Hewitt Henzler (Burke).

  • Hello, I don’t know if my connection to the Burke name will help you, but it couldn’t hurt. I have a GG grandmother named Bridget Burke O’Donnell she was raised in Meenaneary Glencolumbkille Donegal she died April 2, 1884. Bridget married Hugh O’Donnell

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a link to Honoria's July 1, 1869 civil birth record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1869/03382/2240223.pdf  I can see other records for Stephen 1864 Bridget (your Delia)1867 Margaret 1873 Mary (likely your Mariah) 1879. Civil birth records can be found at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie   I did not find a marriage record. They were either married in early 1864 or the year before. The family lived in Flaskagh townland in Elphin civil parish. I don't see the family in the 1901 census for Flaskagh. Did they all emigrate?

i do appreciate the link you sent, thank you and good luck with your search.

  • Dear Roger, thank you so much for your help regarding my grandmother Honoria B Burke born in Elphin, Co. Roscommon in 1869!  Her mother's name was Mary Ratican.  Would you have any information on the Ratican family going back a few generations?  Most likely in Co. Roscommon.   I am interested in finding family last names.  Thank you again so very much!

    Elaine:

There is a large gap in marriage records for Elphin RC parish (1830-1864). I think that may explain not finding a marriage record for Thomas and Mary. I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located an 1842 baptismal record for a Mary Ratican in Elphin. Possibly this record is for the mother of Honoria.

  • Hi. I have information on the family of Thomas Burke and Mary Ratican. Their children, born in Flaska, Elphin Parish were Brigid (baptized 1867.01.24), Honor (1869.11.04), and Mary (1879.12.12). Thomas, is probably the Thomas baptized in Flask (1835.02.15). He was the son of Edward Burke and Honora McCabe. I am a descendant of Thomas' brother Edward who emigrated to Milnesville, PA near Hazleton. A note found from a distant Burke cousin (who did a preliminary genealogy) mentioned Thomas Burke who had children Delia and Moira who emigrated to New York City and another child (name unknown) who emigrated to the Buffalo, NY area. Edward and Thomas Burke also a brother Stephen who emigrated to the Hazleton area. I have much information on the families of Edward Burke and Stephen Burke, but it sounds like there is a connection.
