Portumna Courthouse

Detached four-bay two-storey neo-Classical court house, dated 1847.

The blank areas of walling, large stone doorcases reflect its judicial function. Its scale and robust architectural expression make it one of the most significant public buildings in Portumna. It occupies a dominant position in the streetscape and forms part of a group with the adjoining bridewell.

  • I would love to get here one day - hopefully in next couple of years once we get over COVID. My 2nd great grandmother, Catherine "Kitty" McHugo was convicted at the courthouse, along with her two brothers, Thomas and John, on 27 Dec 1848 and sentenced to transportation to Hobart, Australia. The building must have been very new at that time
