I am in LImerick and originally from the area, not far from Ballingaddy.  I saw a short newspaper article about the orphan girls that were shipped to Australia some time back but unfortunately there are very few surviving records that would link them back to places like Ballingaddy which is a short distance from Kilmallock.  Kilmallock Catholic records start from 1837 but no births are recorded for those parents.
The only source that I know about for Kilmallock Workhouse is the minutes books, that is the minutes of the Poor Law Guardians who were responsible for the running of the workhouse.  The books are held by Limerick Council and I have seen one of them for 1841-1842.  Unfortunately they did not go into much detail about the people they referred to as "the inmates" and hardly ever mention their names.  It is unfortunate that the admissions books do not survive.
Census records from the period were destroyed by edict during to first world war to recycle the paper and the remaining censuses of 1821 and 1880 were destroyed in the public records office fire of 1922.

Actually, I am the one who wrote and posted callaghansofbirdslanding.com.  I have the marriage record from St. Francis in Melbourne.  That was how I learned Johanna's parents' names and where she was from.  I have been searching unsuccessfully for any descendants of Johanna's sister or Michael's siblings in Australia for many years.  There are a few tantalizing dna hits, but nothing has panned out so far.
