M great grandfather, Michael J Quinn was born in born in County Longford abt1866; his birth was registered in Ballymahon.
His father was Patrick Quinn, his mother was Mary McQuade, and his grandmother was Bridget McQuade.
He died in New York City in 1937.
I heard he was a stonemason in Ireland. He and a buddy, John Boland, supposedly stowed away on a ship to Canada. He came into the US through Watertown, New York, and then he went to New York City.
He became a provisional police officer on the NYPD. He did very well and became a detective on the Broadway theater district beat.
He was very tall, especially for that time, and was well over 6 feet. He was a very charismatic man who loved his family, loved his job, loved his faith, loved the USA, and loved his dog and his cat.
I wish I could find out more about where he came from. He had many children who were also very charismatic and quirky. It runs in the family! One son fought in World War II; he was a graduate of the US Naval Academy. A very big deal for the son of a stowaway.
I have always felt that there are family members of mine in Ireland--we just haven't met yet--and, more importantly, I firmly believe some dear mom of long ago wept many tears and prayed that her son and his descendants would never forget her or the Mother Land. So, Patrick Quinn, Mary McQuade, and Bridget McQuade of Co. Longford, Ireland? I am your descendant and I have not forgotten you!
