I am looking for any information on the Bracken family, from Roscommon Ireland.  They are my brick wall.  My direct ancestor is Delia (Deliarthe) Bridget Bracken.  She was born around 1854 in Roscommon and emigrated to the United States, possibly around 1870.  Her parents were James and Ann Bracken.  Her mother's maiden name in unknown.  She had at least two brothers that I have found, James Thomas Bracken and Michael Bracken, both who eventually emigrated to the United States as well.  They all settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Delia married in 1876, Cincinnati, Valentine Harris (Harreus).  She died in 1877, several days after giving birth to my great grandfather, John M. Harris.  Michael, her brother, married Katherine McGlynn in Roscommon and had two daughters there before emigrating.  I have his marriage record and their birth records.  He is listed as being from Ryefield, and his father is listed as James Bracken.  John Dowd was a witness.  Michael Bracken was born in either 1838 or 1848, depending on the record, but most point to around 1848.  James Thomas Bracken was born around 1853.  He emigrated to Lancashire, England, before going to the US.  He married Mary Fitzpatrick, also from Roscommon, while in Bolton, Lancashire.  They had two children there before going to the US.

I found a James and Ann Bracken in Strokestown, Roscommon, with names very similar to my family first names, but when I contacted someone about this family, she was very adament that they weren't mine, but the similarities are there.

Also, I have had DNA done, and I do have a match with a Bracken ancestor from Roscommon.  I researched that tree, and again, family names repeat, but I cannot find the connection.  I must be missing children, most likey one who is my ancestor.  The names in the DNA matching tree include Patrick Bracken, James Bracken, Joseph Bracken, with wives of Channelhouse/Chanonhouse, Farmer, and McDermott.  I have DNA matches with a couple people in this tree, but as I mentioned, cannot find the connection.  They are all from Roscommon as well.  Thank you so much for any help with the Bracken family.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Ryefield is in Creeve civil parish and the RC parish is Elphin and Creeve. Here is a link to the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0556   Even though the index indicates that baptismal records are available from 1841-1862, I'm suspicious that there are a lot of gaps and baptismal records for Bridget, Michael and James and any other siblings are just not available. You may want to scan the register to see if you find any family records. As an aside, I searched on two different subscription sites and did not find any baptismal records for the Brackens.

  • Thank you so much for your response.  It is very helpful.  I will look at the register and hopefully I will find something.  I think it is a longshot, though.

    Thank you, again,

  • Hi

We are trying to trace the ancestors of Catherine Brecken who married a George Coughlin.  We think they came from Athlone.  Their daughter Catherine Coughlin was born in  circa 1856 in Ireland  and subsequently lived in Liverpool, as did their son Patrick Coughlin

Does anyone have any information on them?

    1. Catherine (who might be bracken) Coughlin is 1818.     We have no dates for her husband George Coughlin because only find his name listed on his childrens marriage certificates with no other info except occupation, but we suspect he died fairly young eg around age 50.

    2. Catherine and George had two children we know of:

    Catherine Coughlin

Patrick Coughlin (married Ann gaskin) birth about 1863

We can trace Catherine  the younger and Patrick Coughlin's  family as we are direct descendants, but her parents ancestry is more challenging.

Athlone does not seem too far away from where your Braken's lived.
