MARIA (ELLEN) MYERS 1830 – 1869
Born in Limerick her death certificate states her parents as David Myers and Julia King.
She had clearly been in a workhouse as she was one of the Famine Orphans sent to Australia. She arrived on 26th May 1849 into Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, Victoria. The shipping record is headed ‘A list of female Orphan Immigrants per Ship 12, “Pemberton”. She was 19 years old, could read and write and was a Roman Catholic. Her usual occupation was house servant. She is recorded in “Barefoot and Pregnant” that records all girls bought to Australian under that scheme.
She was employed by Mr. Thomas King who may have been a relation of her mother.
26th Nov 1849 she married Thomas Latham 1817-1876. Thomas was a convict. He a had left his wife & 4 children in England but claimed to be a bachelor on the marriage certificate. Reg. No. 40773. Together they had 10 children.
She died on 25 Mar 1869 after spilling boiling water on her legs.
An inquest was held on 29 Mar 1869 Reg No. 18699 at Fitzroy said she suffered from shock bought on by a fit and accidently scalding from which she could not be recovered.
