Hello, my great uncle Stephen Burke from Co. Roscommon, Village Elphin was in the Royal Irish Constabulary. Other than that, I have no other information about him or any photo. I do not know the exact date of his death but I would say he died at least forty yrs ago or more. He was unmarried. Thanking you for any information you may have! Elaine Hewitt (Burke) Henzler

Elaine:
I located a pension record for a Stephen Burke who was a Sergeant in the RIC. He ended his service at the end of 1922 The RIC was disbanded and the new force became the present day Garda Siochana. This Stephen was born In 1888.
Did your Stephen Burke by any chance go tp Pittisburgh Pennsylvania?

Hi Roger, thank you for this information! Stephen did not go to Pittsburgh Pa, my father was born there though. Stephen stayed in Ireland while his sisters Honoria (my gram) Delia and Mariah came to America. Delia and Mariah lived in Queens NY while my gram married and settled in Pa. then came to Buffalo. I so appreciate any and all info. My dad died when I was a small child so I have had little information on my Irish side.

Elaine:
Was was the approximate year of birth for Stephen Burke? Is 1888 on target. The address on the pension record was South Craig St. East End Pittsburgh. Is that where your family lived?

My ancestors came from Flask in Co. Roscommon. Edward Burke and Stephen Burke were brothers or cousins who settled near Hazleton in northeast Pennsylvania. Stephen had a brother Thomas who married Mary Ratican in Co Roscommon, Ireland. Family reasearch from the early 1980s says that Thomas Burke and Mary Ratican had children Delia and Moira who emigrated to Astoria, NY and another daughter Nora who married a Hewitt and lived in Buffalo, NY. Nora reportedly had sons Joseph and Thomas Hewitt also in Buffalo, NY. Have much more info if interested. Dan McCallus
