Hello!
I am looking for any information on the Cooney family from Castletownarra if possible!
My ancestor James Cooney was born in Castletownarra in 1839, the son of Michael Cooney and Anne (Guinan/Gannon/Genane/Cannon), who were married in Youghalarra on the 13 February, 1831.
James was 17 years old and a farm labourer when he emigrated to Melbourne in 1856 aboard the Winifred/Winefred. He married Catherine Sweeney in Melbourne and died at 1121 Hoddle St, East Melbourne in 1915. He apparently already had a sister, Penelope, in Geelong at the time of emigration.
James' father Michael may have been the son of Thomas Cooney and Catherine Sennot (?) of Urlingford, born in 1806. He died in 1886 in Ballyvaughan, Portroe District. His wife Anne also died in Ballyvaughan in 1879. Michael was a farmer and had a son named Patrick Cooney who remained in Ballyvaughan.
I hope this information helps and I would love to find out anything more!
Many thanks,
Todd Dewberry

Todd,
Welcome to IrelandXO. I'm a volunteer here in Roscrea - about 25 miles away from the Portroe area, but I have done a bit of research and hope this helps a little. I found both Michael Cooney and Ann Genane - I think it's Guinan myself, but all of these are spelled phonetically as someone heard them! I also found James' Baptism record, both attached in the Certificates file here. I'm sorry to say that I could find no record of Pat's irth or any other siblings.
I did locate Michael's and Anne's Death Certificates. Their son Patrick married Maria Quinn in 1879 and went on to have Eight children. Links to all the certificates (free to downoad and print) for births, marriage and death follow:

Hi Todd
James Cooney (1839-1915) is my great granduncle. His brother, Thomas Cooney (1844-1916) is my great grandfather.
I was under the impression that James, Thomas, Bridget and Hanorah (Norah) all travelled over together. I'm going off a family written summary we located after my Dad passed away last year. I guess as we both know, nothing is confirmed until it's triple checked :-).
I'm also unaware of any Penelope being in this branch of the tree.If you have any death details of Patrick Cooney (b.1853) the brother who stayed in Ireland that you can share I'd be really grateful. I can't find anything relating to his death.
Not sure if you have seen the following website, if you haven't, I think you'll find it very interesting. It's about James Cooney and 1121 Hoddle Street, East Melbourne.

Yes, I understand, way late to this post. But here's what I've found and also don't know that maybe will help.
I believe that this Michael Cooney and his wife Ann Guinane may be an uncle of my gggrandmother Ellen Cooney b ca 1820s who later married John Hogan.
Does anyone know siblings of Michael or place of his birth? My closest DNA matches are in Youghlarra/Ballyvaughan area. One researcher believes he was born in Urlingford.
I've a group of 20 or so folks who match on DNA and we work collaboratively on this family, discovered through DNA. Anyone wish to contact me, roseann_hogan@yahoo.com
Thanks guys!

Todd, your facts are consistent with what I've found for this family as well.
