I am just wondering if you know why John was in gaol and how he died? His was my great great great grandfather.
Ann Stinson/Stenson (said to have been born in Ireland), born c 1811 to Christopher Stinson/Stenson and Catherine McAuulty/Anulty.
Ann married John Colwell/Caldwell in May 1842 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and on June 1842 they departed to New Zealand on the Duchess of Argyle, settling in Auckland, New Zealand.
They had four children - James, Catherine, John and Ann - before John Caldwell's untimely death in 1847.
Ann married Patrick Monaghan/Monahan in Auckland and they had three children - Mary Ann, Patrick and Esther - before Patrick's also untimely death in 1855.
(I have stated Ann was born in Co. Fermanagh because a county is required, however, this may be wrong).

Hi Jeanette. John Caldwell was confined in the Auckland Prison as a dangerous lunatic as there was no other facility in Auckland at the time to treat him. I haven't been able to discover any info about the events that led up to him being so confined. I have a copy of the inquest held to investigate his death in prison. John had an injury to his leg which the attending doctor found it difficult to treat because of his disposition. He improved to the extent that he was about to be released into the care of his family, however he died of septicemia to his leg injury before that could happen. A bad outcome for John and Anne and their children. Best wishes, Maureen
