St. Nicholas (Without): Catholic or Church of Ireland?

"The Church of St Nicholas of Myra (Without) is a Roman Catholic church on Francis Street, Dublin that is still in use today. The site has been used as a place of worship as far back as the 12th century. The current church was built in 1829 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas in 1835."

I asked our Dublin expert about your question and here is his response:

like many other parishes and churches in Ireland, not just in Dublin city (St. Andrew, St. Michan, St. Audeon, St. Mary, St. Paul. etc), there's one of each covering similar areas - one Church of Ireland and another Roman Catholic. The 'Without' designation refers to outside the old city walls, there was a separate Church of Ireland parish, civil parish and church 'within' inside the walls on Nicholas Street, in addition to the Church of Ireland parish union of St. Nicholas Without and St. Luke which used part of St. Patrick's Cathedral as it's parish Church.

The Without/Within designation is not usually used for the corresponding Catholic parish - these are based on the underlying civil parishes - the within section was split between the Catholic parishes of SS. Michael & John and St. Nicholas of Myra and the without portion roughly corresponded to the Catholic parish of St. Nicholas of Myra. The Catholic church and parish is generally referred to by Dubliners as 'Francis Street'.
