Hi
I'm looking for help tracing my ancestors from Belmullet. My GGG Grandfather John Mulgrew lived in Belmullet until his death between 1879 and 1887 although I have beeen unable to trace any record of death, this surprises me since it was after 1864 when civil registration commenced, his wife Jane Mulgrew (nee Ryan) died in the Belmullet workhouse in 1887. John & Jane had at least 2 probably 3 children Patrick, Mary & John. Patrick my GG Grandfather married Margaret Caulfiled in Glasgow Scotland in 1871 and had 9 children (Mary; John; James:Patrick; Joseph: Michael; Jane: Sarah; Margaret) from 1871 to 1886, 7 born in Belmullet and the other 2 in Glasgow. I have managed to obtain death records for Patrick & Margaret and all of the children except John & Joseph.
John & Janes probable other son John married Bridget (biddy) Noone, Bridget passed at aged 40. John and his children are found in the 1901 & 1911 Census in Corclogh. I know his family still lived in the town until 1950s but I lose the trail after this. Any help with filling in any of the gaps or tracing other relatives would be much appreciated
Regards
Allan

Like you, I did not find the death record for John Mulgrew Sr. Likely the death was not registered.
I located the death record for John Jr. in 1917 and also his daughter Bridget in 1926. There were also death records for his sons Patrick 1896 and James 1907. They can be found at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie
See ninth record for John Mulgrew died in 1917 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…
See last record from 1926 for death of Bridget https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Hi Roger,
thanks for the info. I had indexes for most of this but hadn’t found the record images or the irishgeneaology.ie site, this is very useful. I hadn’t considered John MULGREWs seniors death would not have been registered since it was after 1864. Was it common then not to register deaths? Do you know if Belmullet church records are online? Are you aware whether Belmullet workhouse records are available anywhere?
Thanks again, Allan

Allan:
There was a slow "take-up" on civil registration when it started in 1864 and certainly in more rural areas, there was a lower percentage of registrations.
The records for Belmullet RC church 1841-1911 are on the subscription site Roots Ireland.
The parish register for Belmullet up to 1880 is here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0742 however, there is no search capability. You have to manually go thru the register.
Some background on the Belmullet workhouse http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Belmullet/ You would have to contact the library in Castlebar for availability of records.
