John MORGAN, farmer, is believed to have been born in November of 1809 at Togher, County Louth to Pat MORGAN and Jane/Jenny DOYLE, baptised on the 14th of November that year. If this information is proven true, then he has at least one sibling, a sister Mary, who was born in Togher in 1811. The parentage of John has been tricky to corroborate, as he has never included any references to his parents on any documents, whereas his wife was much more helpful.
John married Margaret Trainor (variously spelled as McCreanor, Traynor, Treanor, etc) at Silver Hill, Ardee, Louth, on the 3rd of August 1839. She was the daughter of David TRAINOR and Catty HOY. Witnesses at their wedding were Jas MORGAN and Peter TRAINOR. The exact relationship of the witnesses is unknown, but I believe that Peter is Margaret's brother. John and Margaret were married in the year of the Great Wind (January 1839).
The early part of their marriage would hopefully have been relatively peaceful, but the Great Hunger of course added it's spice. They had 5 children from 1840 to 1849, shifting around a bit but generallty always in the Ardee area. They finally chose to emigrate, sailing on the 11th of November 1850 from Liverpool to New York on the Brig Ship Delta. They sailed with only their youngest child, Margaret, who was born in September of 1849. Their sailing lasted about two months, pulling into the port on the 30th of December, where they were held on board and not allowed to disembark until New Years Day 1851. Reports on the arrival of the ship tell a tale of fever, deaths and icebergs. Their other four children sailed the following year, arriving in May of 1852 on the ship The Great Western.
John and his family moved into upstate New York, and by 1852 were settled in Brunswick, Rensselaer County where they leased a farm, and Margaret gave birth to their final child, David. They remained in this area, where many of their descendants live to this day. The family grew, and continued to farm, particularly dairy farming, through the generations. While there is still a large nexus of the family in the Rensselaer County area of New York, branches have spread out across the US to California, Texas, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Georgia and Hawaii, and one has even emigrated herself to Australia.
John pased away on the 27th of March, 1891 at Pittstown, New York. He is buried at St. Peter's Cemetery in Troy, New York (Rensselaer County).
