I am looking for any information regarding my 2 times great grandmother, Mary Fitzgerald. She was born in 1832 and according to two UK census records was born in Offaly, although in one record her birth place is recorded as Cork. I have no information only that she came over to the Uk and married John Heald and settled in Derbyshire. She had 7 children and died in 1906. I have no information about her parents although she did have a brother Tom who emigrated to the USA. Any information at all regarding the Fitzgerald's in this area would be wonderful. I have been searching for years.

Moya,
Do you have any more information? Her marriage record may have included her parents' names, for instance. How about her obituary--does it include any info about her birthplace in Ireland? And the headstone? In the various census records, are there any relatives living with the family? If so, what were their names?
What were the names of her children, in order? Irish naming patters generally meant that the second son was named after the paternal grandfather and the second (or first) daughter after the maternal grandmother.
On RootsIreland, there are a number of Mary and Thomas Fitzgeralds who were baptised in Offaly in the time period mentioned, but more info is needed to identify your Mary.

Hello Patricia , thank you so so much for replying to my message. I have so little information about Mary. The legend always was that she came from Cork but two census records definitely say Kings. Her seven children are as follows: Hannah, George, William, Elizabeth Ann, Amy, Eliza, Mary. My grandmothers name was Mary Hannah and I always wondered if my gg granny was called that too. We cannot find any marriage certificate for Mary and John, my daughter and I have been searching for years. The only reason I know about Tom is that my great aunt, (Mary's granddaughter) told me about him emigrating to USA. In fact she thought he was the Tom Fitzgerald that belonged to JFK. We laughed about this but she was so adamant. Apparently this Tom went to the USA and entered local politics. I think this would have been Tom's son though. We have of course discounted this as the birth places don't match. Mary died on the 18th September 1906 in Worksop Nottinghamshire. We think we have found her grave on line but as yet haven't visited the church yard. I am so sorry to give so little information and I know it's like a needle in a haystack. Thank you so much for showing an interest. Kindest regards, Moya

Hi Moya,
I recommend starting with the most recent records and going back. Is there a headstone and does it mention a place of origin? Who is buried with Mary? Could there be other relatives in the plot who are from the same place in Ireland? Is there a newspaper obituary or death notice that might give a clue? Marriage and death records for Mary that might give her parents' names and place of origin? Records for her children that might give her birthplace? Then look at the names of witnesses to her marriage and at her children's baptisms--some of them may be relatives and tracing them may lead to Mary's birthplace.
I hope this helps.

Hi Patricia,
Mary really is an enigma. I will keep on trying. Just wish I would have asked more questions from my relatives. I have a photo of Mary in her latter years. We will keep on trying. I appreciate your help. Thank you and best regards. Moya
