Before Stephen John and Ellen (Hartnett) Bailey emigrated to America in the fall of 1863, they raised 8 children in the townlands of Gortnagraiga in the civil parish of Mourne Abbey until 1852. The three youngest children, Timothy (b. 1841), Johana (b. 1844), and Margaret (b. 1847) stayed in Ireland.
Stephen is buried in Lagonda Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio.
