Andrew Lee : Short Biography

Andrew (my great great grandfather) was born in May 1829 to Michael Lee and Brigid Early in Lurraga, Roscommon. He was baptised on 27 May 1829 in Kilronan Parish, Roscommon,in the dioceses of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, His sponsors were John Glyn and Brigid Lee.

Andrew has three known siblings, Joseph b.1835, Francis b.1838 and Brigid b. 1841 Andrew arrived on 23 March 1850 at Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. He sailed on the ship, LADY NUGENT, (668 tons, ). He sailed via England, leaving London on 7 December 849,. The ship's Captain was John Parsons. The ship's doctor was Dr Frederick K Laking, surgeon. Andrew Lee (18) is listed as an assisted steerage passenger. Listed as 18 years on passenger list but would have been 20 years according to Baptism Record. He married Anne McGowan on 15 November 1853 . His marriage record states: aged 21 years; marriage registration record:1853/582; married at the Court House in Dunedin. Andrew and Anne had 6 children, Joseph Morgan, William, Anne Elizabeth, John Thomas, Francis and Andrew. Andrew died 28 November 1928 in Invercargill, Southland, NZ. He was buried on 30 November 1928 in Eastern cemetery, Invercargill. His burial record states his burial plot as Block 1 Plot 4; his LAST ADDRESS: O'HARA STREET;Note: ALSO PLOT 4B. Andrew's occupation was recorded as Carrier on his son John Thomas's death register. However, on Andrew's own death certificate his occupation given as Labourer
