Hello, I've been searching brick walls when it comes to my Irish ancestors as they all left during the great hunger. I finally found a record, the baptism of my 2x great uncle Thomas Foody on 14 December 1843 to Martin Foody and Mary Gillvarry in Cooneal, Killala, Mayo. The reason I don't think I ever found this record before is because the format is strange leading to the father's and sons names to be confused with each other. The records on this particular page have the father's given name first, then child's given name, then the father's surname, followed by the names for the mother. The way I realized this was because I saw that the female children's names were listed where normally it would be the fathers. For example it might say, Michael, Bridget Flynn, Mary O'Neil. Obviously two women are not the parents. It's the only page I noticed like that but it's also out of order chronology with the other parish registers. Another mistake is the transcription of the record has the mother's maiden name listed as "Hillvery" when it is clearly Gillvarry. It took me actually reading through the microfilms rather then index searches. Now that I have this information, what else should I look for in this area? I don't think there is a marriage record available for Martin Foody and Mary Gillvarry. The oldest child I think was born before the records survived and as far as I'm aware the next children were born in Toxteth park, Liverpool England where the family fled. I see post famine there are three Foody's living in Killala in 1856 in areas designated Burke and Gardener. Any other suggestions for records that might exist for this difficult time period? Thanks

The subscription site Roots Ireland has the Thomas Foody record in the Ballysakeery RC parish records. Ballysakeery is the RC parish just south of Killala. There were no other siblings shown no no marriage record for Martin and Mary.
The 1855 Griffiths Valuation for Ballysakeery civil parish has three Foody records: Bryan, John and William. Possibly one or more of them are connected to Martin.
Have you considered a DNA test?

I have done DNA with 23&me and uploaded to gedmatch years ago. I've only found one cousin related and still living in England where the family emigrated (my branch later made it to Rhode Island in the USA) and one woman who had Swift/Foody's in Ballina with some records. I'm not sure I'm all that knowledgeable in how to use the DNA to my benefit.

Roger, I'm a little confused about location. Are Cooneal and ballysakeery both names for the same parish at different times? The microfilm I saw had Cooneal on the records cover page. Or is Cooneal a specific area within Ballysakeery? I don't see it as a town land but I do see it exits as a place on modern maps.

Cooneal and Ballysokeary are interchangeable. Also consider Templemurry as another civil parish overlapping the same area.

The 1837 Lewis Topographicak Dictionary for Ballysakeery civil parish shows that there was a chapel in Ballysakeery and a new chapel was being erected in th village of Cooncal. So likely two chapels within the same parish.

Another question about the last name Gilvary. On records in England her surname was spelled different almost ever time I located it on a record. Gilvary, Gillivarry, etc and on one record Kilvary or killvarry. Are these just variations in phonetic spelling or is there a different surname in Ireland that's similar? I do see two men on griffin's valuation in Ballysakeery with the surname Kilivary and nobody named Gilvary. I've seen similar on a couple other records in north Mayo as well. I can't find anything about that surname though. Any thoughts?

I just recently discovered that I am a Foody. My 2 GGF was James Fleming from Bonniconlon, Mayo. He emigrated to Illinois and married Anna Price, from Sligo, I believe. Her parents were Robert Price and Ann Foody, from Castleconner Parish. I haven't had a chance to verify any of this yet and put exact dates and places, but working on it.
My Gedmatch number is BA1927501. Do we match?
