Hello.

A while ago I read something that suggested that the ancestors of Big Jim Larkin originated from a John Larkin of Ballintemple, Armagh.  The dates given were 1776 - 1800 but I'm not sure which event the dates relate to.  It also added that this John Larkin was buried at Killevy, Armagh.

Can you suggest how I woud be able to prove or otherwise these facts?

Thank you again for reading this.

Frances

  • Hi Fran

Apologies your messages seemed to have been missed.

I've asked our Genealogist if he has any further tips.  The first place to start might be the local family history centre:

Armagh Ancestry are the obvious place to start via RootsIreland as they have a research service.

If Big Jim Larkin refers to Trade Union leader and Irish Republican who was born in Liverpool in 1874 then they will have to trace their ancestry back generation by generation to hopefully a connection with a John Larkin of Ballintemple, Killevy parish, County Armagh.

The tithe book of 1834/1835 for Killevy parish, County Armagh records a household headed by John Larkin in townland of Ballintemple.

However, it would appear, for example, that no Catholic church registers covering Killevy parish predate 1832. Full details of church registers with commencement dates can be viewed in PRONI's Guide to Church Records at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/proni-guide-church-records

A good start point for research, of course, would be Armagh Ancestry's database at www.armagh.rootsireland.ie .

  • Hi Fran,

Here is some further information from another IrelandXO post that might be useful.  Again via our Genealogist.

I happened upon IrelandXO post of 2016,  https://irelandxo.com/ireland/armagh/killevy-armagh/message-board/larkin-ancestors , that gives the following family tree for 'Big' Jim Larkin:

Grandparents:    Bernard Larkin born c. 1804 in Killevy parish and Bridget McGivern

Parents: James Larkin born c. 1849 in Killevy parish and Mary Ann McNulty (married Liverpool 1871)

'Big' Jim Larkin born Liverpool 1874

1864 marriage certificate of  James Larkin's sister Ann records ancestral home of their father, Bernard Larkin, as townland of Aghayalloge in Killevy parish.

In 1834/35 Tithe Book of Killevy parish Bernard Larkin is recorded in Aghayalloge and John Larkin in Ballintemple.

    many thanks

Thanks Bernadette. Actually this was the first post I made a few years ago.  I have spent the time since then constructing a family tree as during my research the link with James Larkin came to light. James Larkin's aunt, Ann Larkin, was my great great grandmother and she was his godmother. Since then I have found other members of my family and have connected with two other members of the my tree who are related to Jim Larkin. My original aim was to find my McAteer family. My great great grandfather, Laurence McAteer, was married to Ann Larkin. They had a son, also Laurence who was Jim Larkin's first cousin. It was Laurence snr who was drowned when the ship on which he was travelling went down with all hands off the Dingle Peninsular as he was making the trip to America.  I must admit it's been really interesting to have found the information I've gathered so far. I'm just hoping I can discover some more.

Thank you for taking the time to help me by giving me the suggestions on how I can further my research.
