The Hopkins family held about 147 acres ("1/3 of Strathnalelly"). which was in lease to John Hopkins 1732;1797.

In about 1800 a further adjacent 12 acres (formerly held by Presley) became available.   It was to be leased to a Nicholas and John Hopkins.   John was most likely the leaseholder on the main holding, but he died in 1797.   The 12 acres therefore went to Nicholas but he died in about 1804.   In 1809 the lease was given to a Benjamin Hopkins c1780 - 1864 who was likely a son to Nicholas.

Can anyone explain how John Hopkins 1732-1797 and Nicholas Hopkins c1745??- c1804 were related?   I would suggest that they were brothers.

  • Could this be your Nicholas and John? If so, they had different parents. Perhaps they were cousins?

I couldn’t find the townland of Strathnalelly. Perhaps it is of the following?

--Stranahely           375        Upper Talbotstown          Donaghmore      Baltinglass

    --Stranakelly          591        Shillelagh             Mullinacuff         Shillelagh

  • Thanks Patricia,

The Townland was Strathnakelly or Stranakelly. sorry for typo in text.

The family there were a Joseph and Elizabeth, parents of John c1732 and I suspect Nicholas c1745 who eventually got the 12 acres.

Joseph died in 1745 but I think Elizabeth was still his widow, so it can't be a case of a remarriage of Joseph to a Frances.

The Nicholas c 1743 was probably related but I don't know how, or what became of he and his parents.

    Cheers
