In the 1901 census, my ancestor, Ellen Duffy's occupation is listed as "housekeeper." She lived on Creagh Road, Ballinrobe, and had a 10 month old son at the time. Her husband's, Martin, occupation is listed as a fisherman (as is his brother's, James, also living at the same residence). Am I to assume "housekeeper" means she kept house for someone else? I'm asking because in the 1911 census, her occupation is blank. She has 7 children by this time, so it's reasonable to assume she didn't't work outside of the home in 1911.
Thanks for your help!

Afountas:
Ellen Duffy was the housekeeper in the house where she lived.

Thank you for your reply, Roger! Do you know why this same field would have been left blank in 1911 rather than include "housekeeper"? Might this have to do with the census that year, or did census takers sometimes leave it blank if a woman didn't work outside of the home?

The census forms were supposed to be filled out by the head of household but in many cases the forms were completed by the RIC constable who came to the house to pick up the form. Martin Duffy was illiterate so likely the 1911 form was completed by the constable and he did not show Ellen as a housekeeper. With seven children, her husband and brother in law, she certainly had a full plate.
