Eldest of 7 children, emigrated with eldest sister Bridget in 1848 from Gowran, Co. Kilkenny to Sydney. Worked as a Mounted Trooper in Brisbane for a couple of years. Married Mary Cavanagh from Gowran in Sydney in 1850. Left Brisbane when gold was discovered in the colony of Victoria. Paid deposits for four of his younger siblings to emigrate. Encouraged his parents to emigrate to Victoria. Worked as a carter, on the railways and a hotel keeper. Produced 8 children and buried 6. Buried at Old Ballarat Cemetery with one son, his wife and parents in family plot. Family history written up in book - Australians of the Great Irish Famine, One Clan's Story. ISBN 978-0-64520460-5.
