Hello,

I've been researching Owen O'Neil of Castle Leitrim, Kilbride, County Roscommon. I've found some baptismal records at NLI for Eugenii O'Neil and Margaret McDonnell the parents.

My question is: Have you known church records to record Eugene as the Latin translation of Owen?

Thanks,

Tom

Also, my Kilbride link has been directing me to a different page.

Yes, you will find Owen and Eugene used interchangeably.

  • yes - where Latin is used Church registers , Owen/Eoin/Eoghan is usually recorded as 'Eugenius' or similar. The exact endings vary depending on the wording etc

Most first names are more straightforward - e.g. Joannes for John, Maria for Mary, Katherina for Catherine/Katherine, Martarita for Margaret, others are not so obvious - e.g.  Guliemus for William, Jacobus for James, Carolous for Charles

There are a number of online pages listing Latin Equivalents, e.g. RootsIreland  : First Names

Can you give more details regarding Kilbride parish and the link taking you to a different page. I just went to the Kilbride Roscommon parish page with no issue.
