Hello, I've little to go on except the family of Thomas Murphy born circa 1791 in Ravensdale, County Louth. Sometime between 1800 and 1827 Thomas, his wife Mary & their children left Ireland for Liverpool. Thomas appears in a local trade directory in 1827 as a Joiner. In 1832, at the same address, he is listed as a butcher, a trade that he and his son Thomas followed for some time. Because the record seems to fit I have Thomas (snr) being baptised with parents Bernard Murphy of Haggardstown & Mary Casey of Louth.

Any further suggestion please.

  • Hello MNB, I see the birth in Haggardstown you mention but Ravensdale is in the parish of Lordship which is the opposite side of Dundalk town, the distance is a few miles border to border (both parishes are separated by Dundalk parish and Dundalk town,) church records for Lordship only commence in 1838, see https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0191 As not all parishes have records going back to 1790 we do not know if he could have been born say in Ravensdale. Haggardstown records start in 1752 which is very early for RC records, others like Lordship only commence in the 1830s. You do not mention what the names of the children born in Ireland are so we could check from baptisms. If Thomas was born in say 1790 then the earliest marriage would be 1806 and probably later. There is an 1823 marriage in Haggardstown of a Thomas Murphy and Mary McCormick, no other information. I see one baptism to this couple on 2nd October, 1826, Anne born to Thomas Murphy and Mary McCormick, address given is Anne Street, Dundalk, Co. Louth. Sponsors are Patrick McGinnis and Margaret Cunningham. The period searched was 1822 to 1832, there are 3 other children born to Thomas Murphy's and a Mary wife but all different surnames. If they had children in England then the mothers name may be recorded. There are no children born to a Mary McCormick on Ancestry but a number of Thomas Murphy's have children in Liverpool around the 1830's including a few to a Thomas & Mary Murphy in case the priest did not record the mothers name. There ar multiple entries though so not a one off. This site on Louth may interest you but unlikely to have any definite information for you on your family. https://jbhall.clahs.ie/ Regards Pat
