I am researching John PARK(E)S - birth date unknown. Seven of his children were baptised at St Catherines Parish, Dublin between 1835 and 1850. For six  of them it was recorded that he and his wife Sarah lived at 28 Marrowbone Lane and he was a shoemaker. was Marrowbone Lane pert of a military establishment?

However when the 5th child was baptised there in 1845 his address given was - Manor Coveham - occ. shoemaker

His last child was baptised in 1851 at the Military Church, Arbour Hill, Dublin where he was said to be a Private in the 35th Regiment. The only other possible record for John is a burial at St Catherines in 1853. Sarah appears in Salford, Manchester in the 1861census as a widow.

I have been told that Manor Coveham was a military institution in Surrey but Google has provided absolutely nothing helpful so I would appreciate any comments.

I would be grateful if someone can tell me if there is a Muster Roll for the 35th Regiment in Dublin in the 1850’s as it may provide further information about John.

Thanks

Margaret

  • Hi Margaret, in Ancestry it says he was 43 years at the time of death in 1853 and he lived in Cork street. Is this correct? The 5th child, can you say their name was please or give the document or page you seen this on. You say..........Sarah appears in Salford, Manchester in the 1861census as a widow. Was she with any of her children? The only Sarah I find was born in Salford. Was she born there? Margot

  • Marrowbone Lane was just a regular street, no barracks or other military buildings at that time as far as I can tell. The street was sometimes listed as 'Mary-le-bone lane'.

Your John Parkes appears in at least one Dublin directory listing as a Shoemaker at number 28 Marrowbone lane - e.g. 1840 Pettigrew & Oulton. There was at leas one other John Parkes in the city at the same time, owner of an Ironmonger business.

Some Army Muster Rolls are on Ancestry, but it doesn't look like these cover that dates you need, most other historic British army records are held by the National Archives at Kew in London, they have a website and catalogue (which is a little tricky to search...), and various items can be viewed online or downloaded, some have to be order and paid for.

The lists of army postings show that the 35th Infantry Regiment was posted to Dublin, during the middle of 1851, so ties in with that baptisms for Sarah. From the Army postings it appears that the 35th Regt. was in Nenagh (Co. Tipperary) and Fort Charles (Co. Cork) for most of 1845, when their child Samuel was baptised.

  • Tthank you Margot for your reply. I have all the dates and details for the family from the St Catherines records and I have checked Ancestry for any other details so it is mainly John's army details I am looking for.

Shane, thank you for pointing me to the British Army records in England. I will have a look there. This just leaves me with finding out where Manor Coveham was?
