Hi all,

I’m looking for any information about Tappin Rudd

B:1785 Ireland

D: 11 MAY 1836 Roscrea, Modreeny, Tipperary, Tipperary, Ireland

and , in particular ,

his wife Jane Burgess,

B:1787 Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland

D:27 May 1816 Modreeny, Tipperary, Ireland

I’m looking for information about who they were, where they lived , who their parents were and did they have siblings?

I’ve found birth records for two of their children Minchin and Anne but nothing more . They also had a daughter Phoebe/Phebe but I don’t have a birth record . Minchin became Minchin Rudd esq and I have quite a bit of information on him . There appears to have been considerable money in the family until the famine and encumbered estates but ‘who and how’ ?

I have come across Minchin Burgess of Roscrea as father of Jane but I can find no evidence of this.

Were there other Burgess family in Roscrea or Templemore? I’ve had no luck finding them pre 1850 .

Is anyone able to assist with information please? My brick wall is at least 3 metres thick at the moment.
Many thanks ,

  • Hi,

This link.......12th April 1851   Right hand page....... Mary   born to Minchin Burgess  and Mary Salmon.
This is in Cloughjordan, which is not that far from Roscrea, you have to go through Moneygall in County Offaly (King's County)
02481/05, Cloughjordan - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

It seems she married Patrick Brereton 29th September 1851 in Cloughjordan., it states Maria.

In Griffiths Valuation in 1852, Minchin is in Templeharry, Roscrea, Townland of Brickanagh.

Before 1852 as you say you cannot find anything.............There is a marriage. 1833 to Hannah Guest, this is in the diocese of Cashel and Emly

Diocesan & Prerogative Marriage License Bonds (nationalarchives.ie)

If you use this site you will see a marriage of Phebe to a William Kidd.

    Genealogy (nationalarchives.ie)

Tappin's marriage to Jane is also there in 1809.

These are Marriage Bond's so you wont see an actual record.

Civil records were introduced in 1864, marriage 1844.

  • Thank you Margot!
I will follow up on those links and hope for new leads.
After Jane died,  Tappin Rudd did marry Hannah Guest .
I had found the marriage bonds previously - could you please explain what  exactly they are ? Are they related to catholic or Protestant marriages or something other ? I have no context for them.
Could  you possibly tell me if Minchin and Tappin are unusual names ? They seems so to me but I have no idea .
    Thank you for helping !!

    Yes Protestant marriages.
Not sure where you would find actual records most are kept in Belfast, Northern Ireland with PRONI. (Public Records of Northern Ireland)

    Yes they are unusual.
Minchin.... there are 115 records in Ancestry with Minchin as the Christian name.
Tappin there 500+ but some are surnames.
