Hi from New Zealand!

My grandfather, Frank Joseph Doyle, was a Irish immigrant to New Zealand. I can't be certain of when, but it must have been pre-1966 which is the year my father was born here in New Zealand. After he immigrated he served in the RNZAF (https://vietnamwar.govt.nz/veteran/cpl-frank-joseph-doyle) during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, being estranged from that side of my family, I know very little of him, where he came from in Ireland and any extended family there. Could anyone here suggest a place to start looking?

Cheers,

Aidan Doyle

  • Aidan,

You should obtain his death record which may have the names of his parents, also his military record.

The surname Doyle is associated with County Wexford, but can be found in various parts of Ireland.

  • Hi Aidan,

I found this baptismal record for a Francis Joseph Doyle in 1936 in Longford. I can’t say with any certainty that he is your ancestor, only that he could be.

    Francis Joseph Doyle

    Born: 29-Dec-1936

    Bap. 31-Dec-1936

    Address:               Rosduff

    RC Parish:   COLMCILLE, Co. Longford

    Father:  Patrick Doyle

    Mother:               Maria Anna Brady

    Sponsors:            Bernard Brady, Catherine Doyle

    Priest: FR J GOODWIN

On Ancestry, I saw a tax record or directory showing a Francis Joseph Doyle, manager, with wife Kathleen.

  • Aidan,

Please see attached - No. 1705.  Could  "Doyle F. J ". be "Francis Joseph"?

  • Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your very helpful responses. I didn't receive a notification that anyone had replied!

Upon some further research, I've found out the following details about my grandfather:

He was born on 26 Oct 1928 in Dublin, to a James Doyle and a Mary Ellen Doyle, née Price. He died in 2004.

His first wife I believe to be Phyliss Hilda Short, married Oct 1949 in Northamptonshire. His second wife was my grandmother, Beryl Cynthia Doyle, born 1934 in Birmingham.

I am taking an Ancestry DNA test but understand this will be of limited use in my genealogical research.

Could you suggest where I might next look, using these details?

    Many thanks,

    Aidan

  • Aidan,

Attached details in relation to the marriage of a James Doyle and a Mary Ellen Price in Dublin South 1923.

Do you have the Civil record.

If not, I can check with my local Registration office, as I cannot find the entry online.

  • Thank you so much! I'm afraid I don't have the civil record, so it would be amazing if you could check.

  • Aidan,

Attached record of the marriage of a Laurence Price and a Lizzie Mockler in 1887. The address is shown as Mercer Street for Laurence. Lizzie's father is recorded as Railway Guard.

In the census records there is a Laurence Price in Long Lane and Dean Street. Possibly two different people?

In regard to ages on the census forms - treat with caution!

  • Aidan,

Birth records for a Michael Price - 1892 and Laurence Price 1894 (Born in November 1893) Recorded in January 1894.

Confirms the marriage of Laurence Price and Lizzie (Elizabeth) Mockler.

Looking at the records for "Price", it appears that they were trades people.

  • Aidan,

Please see attached record of the baptism of a Laurence Price in the Pro Cathedral - Dublin in 1857.

His address is Montgomery Street. Mother is named Marianna Clynch. Father recorded as Michael Price.

Possibly your relative? He is recorded in Mercer Street in 1872 which is the address on his marriage certificate in 1887.

Attached Civil Record of the birth of Gertrude Price in January 1899. Mother: Elizabeth Price nee Mockler. Address: 42 Long Lane - Dublin South.

I have checked for the births of Lillie, Mary and Edward, but did not find them on the Civil Record.

If there is any issue you need to check on, feel free to contact me.

    Best Wishes,

  • Wonderful, thank you so much! This information has given me an excellent basis on which to find out more. It seems I've now got the Price side of my family figured out, but an still researching but struggling with my grandfather's father's family. I know he was born to James Doyle (born 1888 based on another record I've found) and Mary Ellen Price. James Doyle was born to a John Doyle and I believe a Kate Doyle (based on the fact there was a Kate Doyle living at 38 New Street in 1911). I can't quite figure out if this is the same John and Kate who lived Daniel Street at the time of the 1901 census, as there is no record of them having a son named James! It seems the Kate Doyle who lived on Daniel Street and the Kate Doyle who lived on New Street were both born in County Meath, with husbands named John, but perhaps three years apart (1864 and 1861). I suppose they could still be the same person, but with erroneously recorded years of birth and names of children?

  • Aidan,

It will be difficult to sort out the various families, due to the fact that so many were named "Doyle".

I suggest that you create a new Post based on the marriage of James Doyle to Mary Ellen Price in 1923, and on the fact that they sons - James Augustine in 1924,  William 1926 and  Francis Joseph 1928 with the address New Street Area of South Dublin. They may have families in the Dublin region.

    Good Luck with it.
