Help sourcing an awkward civil registration of death.

Michael died at age 1 of "diarreah, 4 mos., certified." Certified means there was a doctor in attendance.

Note that the child Michael's 1880 death was registered by Margaret Mullane.

John who married Bridget Foley was a farmer.  The records of the earlier marriage/family of a John Mullane indicated residence in the city of Cork.  I doubt very much that the two Johns are the same person.

In Griffith's Valuation of Cork in 1853, the following Daniel Mullanes were listed as heads of household in the townland of Toreen:

John’s address on both marriages is Toureen (Mourneabbey) and his occupation on both is farmer & his fathers name on both is Daniel. 

The registration of the births of their 2 sons in Hodders Lane both give the mothers maiden name as Sullivan, 2 and 3 years respectively after the marriage of John Mullane to Margaret Sullivan. Is it not too much of a coincidence to be 2 different John’s? Would it be possible they moved to the city for accommodation and employment - it’s just 16 miles away from Mourneabbey. You could be correct, Mullane was the most common name in Mourneabbey at the time but the fact that he married Margaret Sullivan and the mother of the boys was formerly Sullivan could they be the same couple?

Your John Mullane married Bridget Foley. He was a farmer from Tooreen, Mourneabbey.  He was also a widower.

You tried to find an earlier marriage and found a John Mullane married to Margaret Sullivan. They had two children.  This couple lived in Cork City.

You asked was it too much of a coincidence for there to be two different Johns.  I don't believe so. RootsIreland lists baptisms for 212 boys in Co. Cork named John Mullane, so it was not an unusual name.

Yes, it's possible that your John went to Cork City to work, but I tend to doubt it.  He was a farmer and had land to tend to and probably animals to raise. Plus travel would likely have been by ass-and-cart, so a trip to the city was not easy.

Did you look at the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses online to see if you can find the various Mullanes?

I have John and Bridget and their family on the 1901 & the 1911 census. I hadn’t thought of looking for John and Margaret, I’ll do that tonight and let you know how I get on.
