My immediate Linden gang left Carrickanny during the 1870s, settling in Johnstone, Scotland. My branch emigrated to Boston MA in 1883.

Some family may have remained and/or married into local families.

The family was in the area as my Laurence & a Hugh were listed in Loughgilly in the 1796 Spinning Wheel Census.

I'd love to connect with any potential relations (albeit distant at this point) & am very happy to share at least one part of the family history.

Best,

Karen Linden

  • Karen,

No Lindens in Carrickananny in the 1901 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Balleek/Carrickananny/

Griffiths Valuation (1864) lists Laurence & Hugh Lyndon in Carrickananny. Laurence had a labourer’s house (plot 2b) which he shared with Bernard McParland. Likewise Hugh Lyndon had a labourer’s house (plot 5b) not too far away. Hugh’s name was deleted from the records in 1876 and Laurence’s in 1883.

This might be Hugh’s death in 1872 in Carrickgallogly which is nearby:

I don’t see a death for Laurence in Ireland.

I searched the marriage records 1864 to 1901 for Linden marriages in the Newry registration area but did not see any for this family.

Scottish birth record for Laurence Linden born in Johnstone in 1874 says parents Hugh Linden & Helen Mc Innes married in Ireland in December 1872 but I can’t find that event in Irish records. Laurence's birth was registered by his grandmother Catherine Linden.

3 children's deaths to above couple, all in Johnstone:

    Michael Linden 1873 aged 0

    Helen Linden 1873 aged 0

    Bridget Linden 1886 aged 3.

    Some other births:

    Mary Ann 1877

    Catherine 1880

    Margaret 1883

    Bridget 1883

    Ellen 1887.

Ellen & Helen are interchangeable names in Ireland and in Scotland.

Family are at 5 William St, Johnstone in the 1881 census. Hugh labouring in an oilworks.

    Hope this helps.
