Hello,
I'm researching Thomas and Mary Emerson of Edenvase, Armagh, Northern Ireland.

I'm wondering if Elzabel is still active on irelandxo.ie, as she has extensively researched the Emerson families of County Armagh, per an earlier post.

I'm particularly interested in a daughter, Mary Emerson (abt. 1820-1894; my 2nd great-grandmother), who married John Henning of Armagh in 1839.

I've been able to trace DNA matches to the Henning side, but less on the Emerson side.  I have some information on Mary's siblings William, Ruth, Hannah, Isabella.  Most of the other information I'm finding intermingles the Edenvase Emersons and the Emersons of Derryscollop (Clonfeacle Parish).

I also have DNA matches with people who purport to be descendents of Thomas Edward Emerson and Margaret Marshall (Derryscollop?) and I'm thinking that is another branch of the Emerson tree.

Any information on Mary Emerson and Thomas Emerson and Mary's mother, or the Emersons of Derryscollop  would be MUCH appreciated!

Kind regards,
Ralph

  • Hi again,

I believe "Edenvase" is likely a mistranscription of Edenvale.

  • Ralph,

Tithe applotment records for 1832 list Thomas Emerson as a farmer in Edneveys (one of many alternative spellings):

    http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/armagh/tithe-applotments/lisnadill-parish.php

What appears to be his son Thomas married Martha Elliott in 1865 (2nd marriage for him):

That Emerson family still there in 1901:

Abstracts from PRONI wills site (probate files themselves will be in PRONI but not in-line):

Probate of the Will of William Emerson late of Edenvase County Armagh Farmer who died 26 August 1904 granted at Armagh to William J. Emerson Farmer.

Emerson Herbert of Edenaveys Armagh county Armagh carpenter died 7 May 1950 at the City Hospital Armagh Administration Belfast 24 November to Anna Elizabeth Emerson the widow. Effects £189 10s.

In case you didn’t notice, they were Church of Ireland. Sadly, Lisnadill COI records were destroyed in the 1922 fire and they now have nothing before 1877 or thereabouts.

  • Hello Patricia and Elwyn,
Thank you for your quick replies to my questions!!  I really appreciate all you do!

    PATRICIA-
Thank you for the post from rootsireland.ie.
Yes, that is most likely the record for the birth of my 2nd great grandmother, Mary.  I appreciate your post because it confirms her parents were in fact Thomas and Mary. It also changes her birth location from Edenvase/Edneveys to Ednavin.  Thanks!

    ELWYN-
Thank you for your information; detailed, as usual!  I'll tie this all in with what I have.

I'm still searching for additional info on Mary Emerson-Henning's parents, Thomas and Mary. I would love to find mother Mary's last name, but I suspect that will be hard to come by.

    Kind regards,  Ralph
